Long-term monitoring reveals widespread and severe declines of understory birds in a protected Neotropical forest

Henry S. Pollock et al.

Summary: A 44-year population study of a Neotropical understory bird assemblage in a protected forest reserve in central Panama revealed that among 57 resident species analyzed, only 2 showed an increase in abundance while 40 species exhibited declines, with severe losses in estimated abundance. These declines were independent of ecological factors or phylogenetic affiliation, indicating widespread and alarming trends of tropical bird declines in intact forests. Understanding the underlying ecological mechanisms driving these declines is identified as a pressing conservation priority.

Biotic Indicators for Ecological State Change in Amazonian Floodplains

Sandra Bibiana Correa et al.

Summary: Riverine floodplains are biologically diverse and productive ecosystems, but changes in the flood pulse due to accelerated hydropower development, climate change, and deforestation could push tropical floodplain ecosystems beyond a critical threshold, resulting in adverse effects on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Vulnerability of global biodiversity hotspots to climate change

Brittany T. Trew et al.

Summary: The review highlights the importance of climatic processes in shaping biodiversity hotspots and emphasizes the need to consider spatio-temporal variability in climate for vulnerability assessments. It suggests that fine-scale spatial variability and stability in climate may buffer some hotspots from future changes, while others with more variable climates may have greater resilience. Higher-resolution forecasts are necessary to inform conservation strategies and address the physiological responses of organisms to climate variability.

Long-term change in the avifauna of undisturbed Amazonian rainforest: ground-foraging birds disappear and the baseline shifts

Philip C. Stouffer et al.

Summary: Research has shown that bird populations in the Amazon rainforest are decreasing without the presence of deforestation or other human-induced changes. Today's forest fragments and second growth are more impoverished compared to historical abundance, and goals for bird community recovery in second growth must acknowledge that modern bird communities will inevitably differ from those of over 35 years ago.
