Elements of disease in a changing world: modelling feedbacks between infectious disease and ecosystems

Elizabeth T. Borer et al.

Summary: Ecosystem eutrophication can alter disease dynamics in primary producers, affecting net primary productivity and elemental recycling. Exploring the intersection of disease ecology and ecosystem ecology can enhance both fields, but a framework explicitly linking these disciplines is currently lacking.

Between-population differences in constitutive and infection-induced gene expression in threespine stickleback

Lauren E. Fuess et al.

Summary: The vertebrate immunity system consists of constitutive and inducible defenses, influenced by selective pressure from parasites and pathogens, leading to variations in immune responses across populations. Through a natural host-parasite model system, it was found that populations adapt to parasites through constitutive differences, shared inducible responses, and divergent inducible responses. Gene expression analysis showed limited divergence in constitutive immune defense expression, strong conserved inducible responses to parasites, and some immune-related genes with divergent inducible responses that may contribute to infection success or failure.
