Distribution and ecological risk assessment of phthalic acid esters in surface sediments of three rivers in Northern Vietnam

Thuy Minh Le et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution status and distribution characteristics of ten typical phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in sediment samples collected from three rivers in Northern Vietnam. The results showed that DEHP was present at the highest levels in all samples, while DMP, DEP, and DPP were detected at lower frequencies and concentrations. Significant correlations were found between the median-chain PAEs in sediment samples, and the median-chain PAEs had a higher ecological risk than the short-chain PAEs.

An introduction to the sources, fate, occurrence and effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals released into the environment

C. D. Metcalfe et al.

Summary: This article discusses the sources and fate of selected endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the environment. It focuses on the classes of compounds that disrupt the endocrine system of vertebrate and invertebrate organisms. The article highlights the fate of EDCs in environmental media where there is a clear link between exposure and endocrine effects in humans or other taxa.

Fate and ecological risks of current-use pesticides in seawater and sediment of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea

Ling Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that 17 different modern pesticides are widely distributed in seawater and sediment samples, mainly concentrated in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea. They are mainly caused by widespread application in local agriculture and fishing activities. These pesticides are mainly distributed in the surface and bottom layers of seawater, and their vertical distribution characteristics are influenced by atmospheric deposition and re-suspension.

Exposure and tiered ecological risk assessment of phthalate esters in the surface water of Poyang Lake, China

Shunhao Ai et al.

Summary: Phthalate esters (PAEs) are widely produced and used in China as endocrine disruptors, with a significant amount entering aquatic systems annually. A study in Poyang Lake found that concentrations of PAEs nearly doubled in the dry season compared to the wet season, with DBP and DEHP being the most abundant congeners. The ecological risk assessment revealed that while DEP and BBP posed no risk in the lake, DBP had a potential risk and DEHP had an unacceptable risk that requires further action.

Prevalence and hazardous impact of pharmaceutical and personal care products and antibiotics in environment: A review on emerging contaminants

Preeti Chaturvedi et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a global health emergency caused by the unrestrained use of pharmaceutical and personal care products. The presence of various organic compounds in the environment, including antibiotics and antimicrobial agents, poses serious health risks to humans. Research needs to focus on discussing the sources of antibiotic resistance and the ecotoxicity risks in the environment.

The spatiotemporal distribution and potential risk assessment of 19 phthalate acid esters in wastewater treatment plants in China

Shaojing Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentration of phthalate acid esters in wastewater treatment plants in China has been continuously increasing, leading to a rise in exposure levels. DIBP poses a high risk in effluent and further toxicological research is needed. The risk of sludge application in agricultural land is much higher than that in nonagricultural land.
