Interannual variability of vegetation sensitivity to climate in China

Ping Jiang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation sensitivity to short-term climate variability in China over the past three decades and found that vegetation sensitivity varies with vegetation type and climate region, with vegetation in the southwest and mountainous regions showing higher sensitivity. Climate variability in the early 1990s led to a significant increase in vegetation sensitivity, and precipitation had an increasing influence on changes in vegetation sensitivity across different climatic conditions. Identifying regions and vegetation most vulnerable to future climate variability through quantitative analyses of ecosystem sensitivity to climate variability is crucial.

Evaluation of the impacts of human activities on propagation from meteorological drought to hydrological drought in the Weihe River Basin, China

Te Zhang et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the impacts of human activities on the propagation of meteorological drought to hydrological drought using an effective framework. The results show that human activities significantly disturb hydrological drought variations and propagation characteristics. The thresholds for triggering different levels of hydrological drought generally become larger with changing rates, but smaller in spring and winter. The study provides important insights for drought preparedness and adaptation strategies.

China urbanization process induced vegetation degradation and improvement in recent 20 years

Yi Luo et al.

Summary: Vegetation plays a crucial role in improving the quality of the eco-environment and promoting sustainable development in urban agglomerations. Research in China has shown that over 70% of areas have experienced significant vegetation improvements during the urbanization process, with urbanization intensity negatively correlated with the vegetation index.

Quantitatively distinguishing the impact of climate change and human activities on vegetation in mainland China with the improved residual method

Yahai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impacts of climate change and human activities on vegetation dynamics in mainland China, with the finding that land use changes have a greater influence on vegetation changes than temperature and precipitation changes. Activities such as planting trees and returning farmlands to forests have increased the coverage of grasses and mixed forests, while cultivated vegetation has decreased. The improved residual trend method was shown to reduce uncertainty in quantifying the effects of climate and anthropogenic factors on vegetation dynamics, providing a theoretical basis and tool for future ecological management strategies by the government.

How Large-Scale Anthropogenic Activities Influence Vegetation Cover Change in China? A Review

Dingrao Feng et al.

Summary: Vegetation cover in China has undergone large-scale changes, largely influenced by human activities. Afforestation, intensification of cropland, and the U-shaped impact of urbanization are key factors driving large-scale greening. The interaction of anthropogenic factors and partly human-driven climate change plays a significant role in these vegetation cover changes.

Time-lag effects of NDVI responses to climate change in the Yamzhog Yumco Basin, South Tibet

Meng Zhe et al.

Summary: The study focused on vegetation dynamics and their response to climate change in the Yamzhog Yumco Basin from 2000 to 2018. The results showed an increasing trend in NDVI, with temperature being the primary driving factor. Future grassland conservation projects need to consider the time-lag effects on vegetation dynamics.

Satellite time series data reveal interannual and seasonal spatiotemporal evapotranspiration patterns in China in response to effect factors

Minghan Cheng et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the performance of MOD16 data in China and analyzes the interannual and seasonal variability of ET. The results show that there are significant temporal and spatial differences in vegetation ET across different seasons and regions in China. In southeast China, surface vegetation is the main factor affecting ET, while in northwest China, ET variation is influenced by multiple factors.

Impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activities on vegetation change: Evidence from typical areas in China

Kaiyuan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the heterogeneous impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activities on vegetation change in China using trend analysis and Geodetector approach. The results showed that both climatic factors and anthropogenic factors play important roles in influencing vegetation change, with forestry investment identified as the dominant driving force. Protecting vegetation is crucial for promoting vegetation greening and maintaining high levels of forests.

Quantifying the contributions of human activities and climate change to vegetation net primary productivity dynamics in China from 2001 to 2016

Wenyan Ge et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relative contributions of climate change and human activities to net primary productivity (NPP) in China using a two-step methodology based on RESTREND. Results showed a significant increase in NPP during the study period, with both climate change and human activities playing favorable roles in vegetation growth. Climate factors contributed 60.06% to vegetation changes, while human activities contributed 39.94% to NPP. Precipitation, temperature, solar radiation, and other climatic factors all had varying impacts on vegetation growth in different regions of China.

Summary: This study analyzed the changes in vegetation cover in the mid-lower reaches of the Hanjiang River Basin and its response to temperature, precipitation, and human activities. The results showed an increasing trend in vegetation cover, with the response to climatic factors varying depending on elevation, and human activities generally having a positive effect on regional vegetation cover.
