Spatial resolution of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and greenness exposure misclassification in an urban cohort

Raquel B. Jimenez et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of different spatial resolutions of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) on exposure misclassification of greenness. The results showed that coarser resolution NDVI led to higher greenness estimates, but the exposure distributions were similar. Continuous estimates showed poor agreement, while agreement in categorical estimates varied from poor to strong.

Differences of carbon and nitrogen stoichiometry between different habitats in two natural Korean pine forests in Northeast China's mountainous areas

ya-fei WANG et al.

Summary: There is a strong link between vegetation and environmental factors. This study examined the stoichiometric characteristics of plants in four different habitats in two Korean pine forests. The results showed significant differences in organic carbon content among different habitats, while there were no significant differences in total nitrogen content. The C/N ratio also showed significant differences among different habitats, with the most pronounced variations observed in pit-mound complexes. Photosynthetically active radiation was found to be the most important factor influencing the stoichiometric characteristics of plants in these habitats.

Lijun Dai et al.

Summary: The effects of topography, land cover type, and soil physicochemical properties on the distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau were investigated. It was found that altitude and TN were the most important factors influencing SOC in the surface and subsurface soil layers.

Representing the Dynamic Response of Vegetation to Nitrogen Limitation via Biological Nitrogen Fixation in the CLASSIC Land Model

Sian Kou-Giesbrecht et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of vegetation's dynamic response to nitrogen limitation in simulating terrestrial carbon sink. By incorporating a new representation of nitrogen cycling, the authors were able to show that biological nitrogen fixation increases the estimate of present-day carbon sink while reducing the carbon sink driven by elevated CO2 in historical periods.

Effects of forest floor characteristics on soil labile carbon as varied by topography and vegetation type in the Chinese Loess Plateau

Baorong Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that vegetation type and topography significantly influence forest floor properties. Soil total nitrogen and phosphorus increased with higher litter stock, coverage, and thickness, while soil pH and bulk density decreased. Soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil LOC fractions also increased significantly with higher litter stock, coverage, and thickness.

Responses of Temperate Forests to Nitrogen Deposition: Testing the Explanatory Power of Modeled Deposition Datasets for Vegetation Gradients

Marina Roth et al.

Summary: A study conducted in southwest Germany found that nitrogen deposition had a lesser impact on explaining vegetation gradients in forest ecosystems compared to other site factors such as soil C/N ratio, soil pH, and canopy cover. The effects of nitrogen deposition on species richness, nitrophyte cover, and sensitive character species cover varied depending on the deposition model used and the forest types examined. The study highlights the importance of considering contextual dependency when evaluating the effects of nitrogen deposition in forests.

Fluxes, stocks and availability of nitrogen in evergreen broadleaf and fir forests: similarities and differences

Panagiotis Michopoulos et al.

Summary: This study assessed nitrogen fluxes in litterfall, nitrogen stocks, and available nitrogen in soils of evergreen broadleaf and Bulgarian fir forests. The fir forest showed higher nitrogen fluxes and total nitrogen stock in soil, while the upper soil layer of the broadleaf forest had a higher percentage of available nitrogen. This difference may be attributed to microclimatic conditions.

Changes in soil organic carbon and total nitrogen in apple orchards in different climate regions on the Loess Plateau

Yuanhong Zhang et al.

Summary: Research conducted on apple orchards in the Loess Plateau revealed that soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations and stocks were significantly lower in the semiarid region compared to the semihumid region, with higher C:N ratios. Additionally, SOC and TN concentrations generally decreased with increasing soil depth, with the highest concentrations found in the 0-120 cm soil layer. The variability of SOC and TN was mainly influenced by precipitation, plantation age, topographical properties, and soil type.

A systematic analysis and review of the impacts of afforestation on soil quality indicators as modified by climate zone, forest type and age

Yang Guo et al.

Summary: Afforestation significantly increases soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus stocks. Factors such as land use system, climate zone, and forest type have substantial impacts on soil properties. The age of forests plays a crucial role in the accumulation of soil organic carbon and nitrogen.

Tracing Riverine Particulate Black Carbon Sources in Xijiang River Basin: Insight from Stable Isotopic Composition and Bayesian Mixing Model

Jinke Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that the PBC/POC ratio in Xijiang River was slightly higher, possibly due to the mobility difference between POC and PBC, aerosol BC input and riverine biogenic effect. The isotopic compositions of PBC depleted 13 C compared with POC and DOC, indicating possible sources from biomass burning or fossil fuel combustion BC particles input and fractionation during soil organic matter production. The MixSIAR model showed that most PBC in the study area was derived from fossil fuel combustion.

Soil Enzyme Activities and Their Relationships With Soil C, N, and P in Peatlands From Different Types of Permafrost Regions, Northeast China

Chao Liu et al.

Summary: Peatland is a key component of terrestrial ecosystems in permafrost regions and has significant effects on climate warming. Soil enzymes play an important role in the biogeochemical cycle of soil nutrients, and their activities are affected by permafrost type as well as soil physicochemical properties. Permafrost degradation may alter soil enzyme activities by changing soil properties, with soil inorganic nitrogen and moisture content being the main influencing factors.

Seasonality of nitrogen sources, cycling, and loading in a New England river discerned from nitrate isotope ratios

Veronica R. Rollinson et al.

Summary: Coastal waters globally are increasingly impacted due to the anthropogenic loading of nitrogen, especially in the Little Narragansett Bay estuary in New England where sources contributing to eutrophication were assessed. The study found a direct relationship between N loading and river discharge magnitude, with seasonal variations in N sources such as groundwater, industrial point sources, and wastewater treatment facilities. The findings emphasize the importance of considering seasonality when mitigating eutrophication in estuaries and provide a framework for interpreting NO3- isotope ratios in river systems.

Linkage of fine and coarse litter traits to soil microbial characteristics and nitrogen mineralization across topographic positions in a temperate natural forest

Tomohiro Yokobe et al.

Summary: The topographic positions in natural forests can significantly impact litter traits, soil microbial characteristics, and nitrogen mineralization, leading to plant-soil feedbacks. In a temperate forest dominated by Fagus crenata, it was found that upper slope positions have higher coarse litter abundance and litter C-to-N ratio but lower soil microbial biomass, bacterial abundance, and N mineralization potential. This suggests that fine litter traits and coarse litter abundance are closely related to soil microbial characteristics and N mineralization in forests with varied topography.
