Spatiotemporal changes in ecological network resilience in the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration

Longyang Huang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the resilience of ecological networks (ENs) in the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration. The results showed that the spatial range of ENs had shrunk by 14.3% from 2000 to 2018. The overall structure, component quality, and network function of ENs had decreased, leading to a significant decrease of 16.8% in EN resilience. The study also found a strong temporal correlation and spatial fitting degree between the decline in network resilience and changes in urbanization indicators. Based on the findings, measures such as network structure optimization and ecological protection and restoration were proposed to enhance EN resilience.

Summary: Construction and protection of ecological networks (ENs) are effective means to curb habitat fragmentation and strengthen landscape connectivity. This study proposes a complete evaluation framework based on quality-function-structure to support the formulation of protection strategies. The ENs of Wuhan urban agglomeration (WUA) are built and evaluated using circuit theory and remote sensing data. Protection strategies are proposed based on the coupling of quality-function-structure, including the inclusion of all ecological sources in nature reserves, repairing key areas, and determining the priority of construction and protection.

Summary: In this study, growth rate potential models were used to project the impact of climate warming on different temperature fish species in reservoirs. It was found that climate warming will differentially alter habitat suitability for warm-water and cool-water piscivores, favoring warm-water species. Changes in habitat quality are expected to affect the dynamics of reservoir fish populations to varying degrees.

Landscape change effects on habitat quality in a forest biosphere reserve: Implications for the conservation of native habitats

Wondimagegn Mengist et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic pressures have caused spatial and temporal patterns of Land-Use Land Cover (LULC) change, which significantly influence the quality of natural habitat and ecosystem functions. The study assessed the habitat quality of the Kaffa biosphere reserve using the InVEST model, revealing lower habitat quality in settlement and agricultural areas. Spatial metrics showed forest fragmentation and the expansion of settlement areas was identified as a significant factor influencing habitat quality. Overall, evaluating and predicting the spatiotemporal status of habitat quality under the influence of LULC change is crucial for biodiversity conservation and landscape planning strategies.
