Protection of peri-urban open spaces at the level of regional policy-making: Examples from six European regions

Marcin Spyra et al.

Summary: Peri-urbanisation is a dynamic process involving the expansion of artificial areas into natural, seminatural, and agricultural areas, which threatens biodiversity and ecosystem services. This study analyzed land cover changes in six European case study regions and identified policy improvements to protect peri-urban open spaces. The research suggests potential for improving regulatory instruments and implementing multi-level governance for better protection of peri-urban open spaces at a regional level.

Village classification in metropolitan suburbs from the perspective of urban-rural integration and improvement strategies: A case study of Wuhan, central China

Yasi Tian et al.

Summary: Urban-rural integration is an ideal state that balances and coordinates urban and rural development, but suburbs are often overlooked in this process. Different conditions influence the development direction and types of suburbs. This study mapped 2626 suburban villages in Wuhan using a logistic-geographically weighted regression model, classified them, and provided improvement suggestions for different types of suburban villages.

Suburban identification based on multi-source data and landscape analysis of its construction land: A case study of Jiangsu Province, China

Yasi Tian et al.

Summary: The rapid development of urbanization and industrialization has blurred the boundaries between urban and rural areas, highlighting the importance of suburbs. By using multi-logistic regression and geographically weighted regression methods, the study successfully delimited the boundaries of suburbs in Jiangsu Province and analyzed the landscape characteristics of its construction land. This provided new insights and approaches for the research on suburban spatial identification methods.

Study on the Urban Fringe Based on the Expansion-Shrinking Dynamic Pattern

Changqing Sui et al.

Summary: The urban fringe is a critical part of urban spatial form that influences urban expansion and shrinking. Chinese cities have transitioned from simple expansion to a stage of expansion-shrinking coexistence, leading to varying characteristics and requirements in aspects like urban planning, land use, urban landscape, ecological protection, and architectural form at the urban fringe. Understanding the patterns of expanding and shrinking urban fringes is crucial for urban planning, land use, planning management, and ecological civilization construction.

Spatial identification and determinants of trade-offs among multiple land use functions in Jiangsu Province, China

Yeting Fan et al.

Summary: This study quantified 12 LUFs using a geospatial model and statistical analysis in Jiangsu Province, identified the relationships among agricultural production function (APF), urban-rural living function (ULF), and ecological maintenance function (EMF), and explored the determinants of LUF trade-offs. The study provides valuable insights for policy-makers in future land use planning and management.

Spatial-Temporal Impacts of Urban Sprawl on Ecosystem Services: Implications for Urban Planning in the Process of Rapid Urbanization

Xiaoyan Li et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization in Changchun, China since 2000 has significantly impacted ecosystem services, with habitat suitability and crop yield showing stronger service capacities. Developed urban areas have lower average ES values compared to developing urban areas, and interactions between different services are complex. Urbanization index has a negative correlation with ESs, suggesting the need for sustainable urban planning to mitigate ES loss.

Explaining objective forces, driving forces, and causal mechanisms affecting the formation and expansion of the peri-urban areas: A critical realism approach

Hashem Dadashpoor et al.

Summary: The accelerated urbanization in peri-urban areas of metropolises is a emerging issue with various physical, social, economic, and environmental consequences. Through a critical realism approach and a systematic review, this paper identifies a three-level framework to deepen the understanding of peri-urban areas and provide new perspectives for urban and regional planners to address the challenges in these areas.

Delineating the black soil region and typical black soil region of northeastern China

Baoyuan Liu et al.

Summary: The black soil region in northeastern China is crucial for grain production and food security, but soil erosion has been ignored for a long time. The government now acknowledges the importance of soil conservation, but faces challenges in determining precise conservation priorities for the vast area.
