Ultra-high resolution δ18O of land snail shell: A potential tool to reconstruct frequency and intensity of paleoprecipitation events

Jibao Dong et al.

Summary: Extreme rainfall events pose significant threats to people's lives and economic well-being. Reconstructing the past rainfall variability and understanding the underlying mechanisms of extreme precipitation events is challenging due to the limited instrumental records. However, this study demonstrates that ultra-high resolution measurements of delta O-18 in terrestrial snail shells can be used to reconstruct rainfall variability on weather time scales, providing insights into the history and characteristics of extreme precipitation events.

The Holocene temperature conundrum answered by mollusk records from East Asia

Yajie Dong et al.

Summary: Analyzing terrestrial mollusk assemblages from northern China, we found that the long-term warming trend and seasonal bias explanation observed in climate simulations during the Holocene does not align with the independent evidence from mollusk records. Summer and winter temperatures have a greater contribution to the mean annual temperature (MAT) than spring and autumn temperatures.

Palaeoenvironmental conditions of the Palaeolithic-Neolithic transition in the Fergana Valley (Central Asia)-New data inferred from fossil molluscs in Obishir-V rockshelter (Kyrgyzstan)

Eugenia Osipova et al.

Summary: Archaeological sites increased in the Fergana Valley during the Early Holocene, potentially driven by climate change, specifically warming and/or wetting. However, study of fossil molluscs from the Obishirian site in southern Kyrgyzstan revealed stable climatic conditions and vegetation during the Pleistocene-Holocene turnover, suggesting climate may not have been a major factor in rapid demographic change in Central Asia during that time. Other cultural factors like neolithization and introduction of domestic livestock may have played a more significant role.

Oxygen isotopes in terrestrial gastropod shells track Quaternary climate change in the American Southwest

Jason A. Rech et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the oxygen isotopic composition of modern terrestrial gastropod shells is largely determined by precipitation, making them a useful tool for reconstructing paleo-precipitation. Analysis of gastropod shells from paleowetland deposits in the San Pedro Valley, Arizona revealed differences in isotopic values among different taxa, with an increase in isotopic values between the last glacial maximum and early Holocene. These results suggest that terrestrial gastropods could be used as a proxy for past climate, providing complementary data to speleothems with potentially wider spatial coverage.
