Targets-Plans-Decision: A framework to identify the size of protected areas based on the balance of ecological protection and economic development

Chaoyue Yu et al.

Summary: A framework called Targets-Plans-Decision (TPD) was established to identify the adequate size of Protected Areas (PAs) by combining species distribution probability prediction, Systematic Conservation Planning (SCP) theory, and protection efficiency analysis. The framework defines protection targets, plans PAs of different sizes, and determines the optimal size through ecological protection efficiency analysis. Empirical study in Nanchang showed that setting PAs size to 70% of important habitats and ecosystems was most beneficial for ecological protection, and the TPD framework can serve as a basis for PAs size identification worldwide.

Disentangling effects of natural and anthropogenic drivers on forest net ecosystem production

You-Ren Wang et al.

Summary: By analyzing data from 22 forest sites across Europe, we found that deposition of sulphur and nitrogen has significant impacts on Net Ecosystem Production (NEP) of forests. Sulphur deposition above 5 kg S ha(-1) yr(-1) can significantly reduce NEP, while nitrogen deposition around 22 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1) has the highest positive effect on NEP. Our results emphasize the importance of air quality management for maintaining the biogeochemical functions of forests and mitigating climate change.

Climate change impacts to the coastal flood hazard in the northeastern United States

Talea L. Mayo et al.

Summary: Climate change not only leads to sea level rise and increased coastal flood hazards but also has significant implications for hurricane climatology. Studies suggest that hurricanes may increase in intensity, size, and translation speed due to climate change. These changes have significant implications for coastal flood hazards, particularly in densely populated regions like the U.S. Northeast. Therefore, it is important to conduct local, detailed, and comprehensive flood hazard assessments considering the impacts of climate change on sea level and tropical storm climatology.

Summary: This study investigates the horizontal transport of macro- and microplastics on the soil surface through runoff induced by rainfall. The presence of vegetation was found to significantly enhance the retention of plastics, and smaller and lower density plastics exhibited higher mobility. Herb plants showed better interception efficiency compared to shrub plants, and increasing plant density contributed to the interception of microplastics. Increasing rainfall amount enhanced the transport of plastics.

Global and regional drivers of land-use emissions in 1961-2017

Chaopeng Hong et al.

Summary: Historically, human uses of land have significantly impacted ecosystems, biodiversity, and the atmosphere through greenhouse gas emissions. Despite global efforts to mitigate emissions, land-use emissions have continued to rise, driven by factors such as population growth, agricultural production, and land-use changes. Regional disparities in emissions intensity and the disproportionate impact of certain products, such as beef, emphasize the need for targeted mitigation strategies. Our findings provide insights into the complex drivers of global land-use emissions, offering valuable information for future conservation and sustainability efforts.
