Is there any difference on cyanobacterial blooms patterns between Lake Chaohu and Lake Taihu over the last 20 years?

Honglei Guo et al.

Summary: Serious cyanobacterial blooms caused by lake eutrophication have become a global problem, impacting human production, life, and health. This study examined the characteristics and differences of cyanobacterial blooms patterns in Lakes Chaohu and Taihu over the past 20 years. The severity of blooms showed a similar decreasing-then-increasing trend in both lakes, but with variations in different years. Temperature was identified as the most important driving factor, and TP played a more significant role in recent years.

Evolution of harmful algal blooms in the East China Sea under eutrophication and warming scenarios

Zheng-Xi Zhou et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the East China Sea are experiencing changes due to global warming, eutrophication, and other factors. A model predicts that dinoflagellate blooms will become more frequent and intense in the next 30 years. Nutrient composition changes and accelerated warming associated with climate change are the main drivers. To prevent further intensification of dinoflagellate blooms, efforts should be made to reduce nitrogen inputs and maintain or increase silicate inputs.

Jinge Ma et al.

Summary: Lake Dianchi is one of the most eutrophic lakes in China, and the occurrence of algal blooms poses a significant threat to the water ecosystem. This study reconstructed a unified time series of bloom areas in Lake Dianchi using Landsat and MODIS images combined with the Floating Algae Index (FAI), and analyzed the dynamics, seasonal characteristics, and spatial distribution of algal blooms. The study also analyzed the relationship between environmental factors and algal blooms, highlighting the importance of rainy season images in reconstructing time series based on different sensors.

Using hydrogen peroxide to control cyanobacterial blooms: A mesocosm study focused on the effects of algal density in Lake Chaohu, China

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: The application of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in controlling harmful algal blooms is affected by algal density and species. While H2O2 effectively eliminated algal biomass, using high dosages could lead to increased nutrients and toxins in water. Moreover, higher concentrations of H2O2 altered the phytoplankton community diversity and may result in acute toxicity to zooplankton.

Flow resistance of floodplain vegetation mixtures for modelling river flows

Walter Box et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow resistance of flexible floodplain vegetation mixtures under a range of mean flow velocities and low relative submergences. The results show a significant decrease in flow resistance when the submergence increases, providing new evidence for extending LAI-based modeling to a wider range of vegetation densities. Adjustments to existing LAI-based approaches are needed for high water stages and the contribution of understory grasses to flow resistance should not be underestimated.

Hourly remote sensing monitoring of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Taihu Lake based on GOCI images

Hongye Cao et al.

Summary: The serious harmful algal blooms in Taihu Lake have caused significant losses to the local economy and residents. Satellite remote sensing technology, especially using GOCI images, has become a crucial method for monitoring HAB disasters. By combining the linear mixing model and NDVI threshold method, the HAB area can be accurately extracted from GOCI images with 500-m spatial resolution. Comparisons with Landsat8 OLI and MODIS data show that GOCI images provide more accurate and timely information on the spatial distribution of HABs in Taihu Lake.
