Importance of vision in tandem running during colony relocation in an Indian ant

Summary: This study investigated the role of vision in tandem-running tropical ant Diacamma indicum during colony relocation by impairing the vision in all colony members. The results showed that visually impaired ants had lower efficiency, traveled along longer routes at lower speeds, and often lost their followers, leading to a significant increase in transportation time. However, impaired vision did not affect the number of tandem leaders or their ability to recruit visually impaired followers.

Summary: This study reveals the cryptic interspecific variation in movement coordination of two termite species, highlighting the potential diversity of behavioral mechanisms for collective behavior. The research shows that despite producing less pheromone, Coptotermes gestroi females were able to achieve stable coordination in tandems with males, while Coptotermes formosanus males showed unstable interactions with females. The information-theoretic analysis supported the conclusion that stable tandems only had information flow from female to male, indicating distinct leader-follower interactions in different termite species.

Summary: Processionary caterpillars of Thaumetopoea pityocampa in Europe and Ochrogaster lunifer in Australia form single files of larvae crawling head-to-tail guided by polarization vision, with anatomical specialization in the first stemma.
