Hydrologic impacts of sewershed-scale green infrastructure retrofits: Outcomes of a four-year paired watershed monitoring study

Kathryn M. Boening-Ulman et al.

Summary: This study compares the hydrological changes in watershed-scale runoff before and after the implementation of green infrastructure (GI) retrofits, and finds that the GI retrofits have successfully mitigated peak flow rates. However, additional infrastructure improvement projects may have neutralized the volume reductions. Further research is needed to optimize the location, consider climate change impacts, and improve the design, construction, and maintenance of GI in urban areas.

Hydrologic and soil properties of mature bioretention cells in Ontario, Canada

S. Spraakman et al.

Summary: A field survey of mature bioretention systems in Ontario, Canada found that the infiltration capacity remained above recommended levels and drawdown times were significantly shorter than allowed, with KSat showing improvement for most sites over time. Soil-water interaction properties more closely resembled loamy soils, indicating the development of soil structure over time. Regular visual inspections are recommended for maintenance needs over infiltration capacity testing.
