Cryogenian accretion of the Northern Arabian-Nubian shield: Integrated evidence from central Eastern Desert Egypt

Peng Peng et al.

Summary: Accretionary geology of the Arabian-Nubian shield is studied to understand the Neoproterozoic global tectonics. The investigation focuses on ophiolites, sediments, and igneous units in the Eastern Desert Egypt and reveals the tectono-magmatic scenario. The study provides insights into the ages and origin of the ophiolites, identifies the presence of craton basement, and dates the calc-alkaline units. The findings contribute to deciphering the tectonic evolution during the closure of the Mozambique ocean and have implications for global tectonics.

The supercontinent cycle and Earth's long-term climate

R. Damian Nance

Summary: The long-term climate of Earth is influenced by the assembly and breakup of supercontinents, which impacts global sea level and atmospheric CO2 levels. Supercontinent assembly leads to climate cooling through enhanced weathering, while breakup leads to climate warming as continental fragments cool and subside. Supercontinents also influence global climate through their connection to mantle plumes and large igneous provinces.

Summary: This study investigates the Neoproterozoic magmatism in the Eastern Desert of Egypt and finds that the granitoids in this region were derived from melting of a juvenile source without the input of old continental material.

New insights into Cryogenian arc granitoids hosting Th-U mineralized Ediacaran syenogranite dikes, Ra's Abdah area in the northern Egyptian Nubian Shield: Constraints from U-Pb ages and zircon geochemistry

Osama K. Dessouky et al.

Summary: The transition from compressional to extensional magmatism in the Ra's Abdah area of northern Eastern Desert of Egypt revealed new tectonic environments for Ediacaran uraniferous syenogranite dikes. U-Pb dating showed ages of 597 +/- 15 Ma for dikes and 663.2 +/- 8.4 Ma for arc granitoids, extending the age of late Precambrian post-orogenic dikes to 597 +/- 15 Ma in the Egyptian Nubian Shield. The similar geochemical behavior of zircons from dikes and host rocks suggests a common magma source, with high fractional crystallization playing a key role in the transition from arc granitoids to syenogranite dikes.

Hybrid granite magmatism during orogenic collapse in the Eastern Desert of Egypt: Inferences from whole-rock geochemistry and zircon U-Pb-Hf isotopes

Basem Zoheir et al.

Summary: Granites in the Atalla Shear Zone (ASZ) of the Central Eastern Desert of Egypt provide insights into crust formation and reworking during orogenic cycles. The study reveals three stages of post-collisional felsic magmatism and shows a mixing and fractional crystallization process in the formation of the associated rocks. The similar initial Hf isotope compositions of all ASZ-associated magmatic rocks suggest a control by subducted Neoproterozoic oceanic crust, volcanic arc, and syn-collisional rocks on mantle enrichment.

Subduction to post-collisional volcanism in the Northern Arabian-Nubian Shield: Genesis of Cryogenian/Ediacaran intermediate-felsic magmas and the lifespan of a Neoproterozoic mature island arc

Ayman E. Maurice et al.

Summary: The Neoproterozoic intermediate-felsic volcanic rocks in the Wadi Ambagy area of Eastern Desert, Egypt, consist of three units: Dokhan intermediate-felsic volcanics, post-Dokhan felsic volcanics, and felsites. The Dokhan lavas show characteristics consistent with development in a subduction setting, while the post-Dokhan felsic volcanics and felsites are suggested to have formed in a post-collisional to within-plate tectonic setting. The evolution from subduction to post-collisional settings resulted in differentiation of the accreted arc crust with an increased role of crustal sources in the generation of felsic magmas.

U-Pb geochronology, REE and trace element geochemistry of zircon from El Fereyid monzogranite, south Eastern Desert, Egypt

Sergey G. Skublov et al.

Summary: The El Fereyid monzogranite is a rare metal-rich granite containing zircon, highlighting the importance of studying zircon. Analysis of zircon in the monzogranite revealed multiple internal oscillatory zoning and enrichment in rare earth elements in the cores. The zircon rims showed depletion in most trace elements and similar REE spectra to hydrothermal zircon grains, indicating late-magmatic stage crystallization in a fluid-rich but trace element-depleted environment.

The largest plagiogranite on Earth formed by re-melting of juvenile proto-continental crust

Hamed Gamal El Dien et al.

Summary: Through petrological and geochemical analyses, it has been confirmed that the largest known plagiogranite on Earth, identified in the Arabian-Nubian shield in Egypt, was formed through extensive partial melting of previously accreted juvenile oceanic crust. This previously overlooked mechanism is responsible for transforming juvenile crust into a chemically stratified continental crust.

Closure of the Proterozoic Mozambique Ocean was instigated by a late Tonian plate reorganization event

Alan S. Collins et al.

Summary: A plate reorganization event occurred in the late Tonian period about 720 million years ago, leading to changes in plate movements in the Mozambique Ocean and the future amalgamation of central Gondwana. This event also caused continents to shift to the southern hemisphere and created a pan-northern hemisphere ocean in the Ediacaran.
