Estimation of sand and gravel extraction sites

George D. Bathrellos et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multi-criteria spatial data analysis method to evaluate suitable locations for sand and gravel extractions. The study area was the upper reaches of Pinios River in central Greece. The results show that the most suitable extraction sites are located in the northern, western, eastern, and southeastern parts of the study area.

Patterns of organic matter accumulation in dryland river corridors of the southwestern United States

Ellen Wohl et al.

Summary: This study assesses the abundance, spatial distribution, and size of organic matter in river channels in the dry lands of the southwestern United States. The results show that organic matter is strongly associated with sandbars and woody vegetation. The location and abundance of organic matter can vary depending on the downstream distance and supply of organic matter. The management and protection of these organic matter accumulations in dryland river corridors are recommended.

Modeling the relative morphodynamic influence of vegetation and large wood in a dryland ephemeral stream, Arizona, USA

Julianne Scamardo et al.

Summary: Compared to perennial streams, there is a lack of studies investigating the impact of large wood on sediment transport and river corridor morphology in ephemeral streams. Both large wood and vegetation effectively confine flow to the main channel, causing it to become wider and deeper. Large wood enhances channel change caused by vegetation, but vegetation has a greater influence on channel morphology due to its larger area within the stream corridor.
