Vanadium isotope fractionation during hydrothermal sedimentation: Implications for the vanadium cycle in the oceans

Fei Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents the first investigation of V isotope composition in hydrothermal sediments, revealing significant differences compared to non-hydrothermal sediments and open ocean seawater. The study also establishes a mass balance model that assesses the impact of hydrothermal precipitation on the marine elemental and isotopic budget of V, suggesting that hydrothermal input accounts for -13% of the global marine V input.

Recent Advances in Geochemical Paleo-Oxybarometers

Brian Kendall

Summary: Understanding the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis, eukaryotes, metazoans, and humans on Earth is crucial for the search for complex life beyond our Solar System. The use of paleo-oxybarometers to constrain O-2 levels in the atmosphere and ocean has provided valuable insights into Earth's history. Recent advances in concepts, analysis, and modeling, along with studies on modern environments, have improved quantitative O-2 estimates and revealed a complex history of dynamic O-2 fluctuations since the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis. Further integrated approaches are needed to enhance the accuracy and robustness of atmosphere-ocean O-2 estimates.

Global marine redox evolution from the late Neoproterozoic to the early Paleozoic constrained by the integration of Mo and U isotope records

Guang-Yi Wei et al.

Summary: The emergence and diversification of early animals are believed to coincide with atmospheric and ocean oxygenation, supporting the metabolism of early multicellular organisms; though surface oxygen levels might have risen in the Paleozoic, marine oxygenation levels remain disputed. New molybdenum and uranium isotope data sheds light on the global ocean redox changes from the late Neoproterozoic to the early Paleozoic.

Vanadium isotope evidence for expansive ocean euxinia during the appearance of early Ediacara biota

Haifeng Fan et al.

Summary: The research on vanadium isotopes indicates that during the late-Ediacaran period, global seawater was hydrogen sulfide-rich mainly on continental shelves, which may have been one of the reasons for the relegation of large, complex life to deep-marine settings during that time.
