Effect of thermomechanical treatment and length-scales on spatial distribution of CNTs in Al matrix

Qibing Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial distribution of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in an aluminum matrix and reveals that the length-scale, thermal activation, and external applied stress play important roles in controlling the location of CNTs. The results demonstrate that long CNTs are mainly located at the grain boundaries, while short CNTs enter the grain interiors with the synergy of thermal activation and external applied stress. The understanding of these mechanisms provides valuable insights for achieving precise control over the distribution of CNTs in composites.

Reinforcement with intragranular dispersion of carbon nanotubes in aluminum matrix composites

Qibing Liu et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced Al composites with unique intragranular dispersion achieved using ultra-short CNTs show improved strength and ductility compared to typical CNT/Al composites with intergranular dispersion, providing inspiration for fabricating strong and ductile nanocarbon reinforced metal matrix composites.
