A very high-resolution refractive index sensor based on hybrid topology of photonic crystal cavity and plasmonic nested split-ring resonator

Leila Hajshahvaladi et al.

Summary: An optical refractive index sensor based on a hybrid topology of photonic crystal and plasmonic is designed in this paper. The sensor structure consists of nested circular metallic split-ring resonators embedded in a hexagonal cavity of a rod-type photonic crystal. Numerical simulation using the finite-difference time-domain method shows that a hybrid mode is created by the cooperative coupling between surface plasmon polaritons induced by the split-ring resonators and resonant photonic crystal cavity modes. This hybrid mode not only increases the sensitivity of the sensor but also provides a much higher figure of merit compared to purely plasmonic or purely photonic crystal sensors. Simulation results demonstrate high sensitivity and excellent figure of merit when the proposed sensor is exposed to hazardous gases, showing considerable improvement compared to previous works.

A tunable hybrid graphene-metal metamaterial absorber for sensing in the THz regime

Mohammad Mojtaba Sadafi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a graphene-based metamaterial absorber with high-Q absorption due to the interaction between a split ring resonator (SRR) and graphene. The electric and magnetic fields, as well as the surface currents at the resonance frequency, are investigated to better understand the resonance mechanism. An equivalent circuit model is introduced using transmission line theory, with the accuracy of the model verified through full-wave simulation. Finally, the designed metamaterial is discussed as a potential label-free sensor for chemical and biomedical sensing, showing a sensitivity of 597 GHz/RIU can be achieved with this structure.
