Risk of progression to diabetes and mortality in older people with prediabetes: The English longitudinal study on ageing

Nicola Veronese et al.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence of prediabetes in elderly populations and found that the progression of prediabetes to diabetes is uncommon, while regression to normoglycemia or progression to death is more frequent.

Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Elderly Patients with Frailty and/or Sarcopenia

Jaime Sanz-Canovas et al.

Summary: The increasing life expectancy worldwide has led to a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the elderly, who also frequently suffer from sarcopenia and frailty. These three conditions share common mechanisms, such as insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. The coexistence of these conditions worsens the prognosis of elderly patients. This paper reviews the main measures for preventing and managing sarcopenia and/or frailty in elderly patients with T2DM.

Association between sarcopenia and cardiovascular disease among middle-aged and older adults: Findings from the China health and retirement longitudinal study

Ke Gao et al.

Summary: This study utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to investigate the association between sarcopenia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) among middle-aged and older adults in China. The findings suggest that sarcopenia, as defined by the AWGS 2019 criteria, is associated with a higher risk of CVD in this population.

Prediabetes, Diabetes, and the Risk of All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality in a Japanese Working Population: Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study

Zobida Islam et al.

Summary: Prediabetes defined according to the American Diabetes Association criteria is associated with increased risk of all-cause and cancer deaths, but not cardiovascular disease deaths. In a cohort of Japanese workers, prediabetes defined by FPG and HbA(1c) according to ADA or WHO/IEC criteria is significantly linked to higher mortality risk.

Prevalence and Treatment of Diabetes in China, 2013-2018

Limin Wang et al.

Summary: Based on national data collected in China from 2013 to 2018, the prevalence of diabetes increased, while awareness, treatment, and control of diabetes did not significantly improve. Risk factors such as low physical activity and high intake of red meat, overweight, and obesity also increased during this period.

Risk of Progression to Diabetes Among Older Adults With Prediabetes

Mary R. Rooney et al.

Summary: This study analyzed prediabetes and diabetes risks among 3412 older adults in a community-based setting. It was found that in older age, high prevalence of prediabetes was observed, with more cases regressing to normal blood glucose levels or resulting in death rather than progressing to diabetes.

Li Wang et al.

Summary: The study based on NHANES data from US adults reveals a significant increase in the prevalence of diabetes between 1999-2000 and 2017-2018. Only around 21% of adults with diagnosed diabetes achieved all three risk factor control goals in 2015-2018.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus in older adults: clinical considerations and management

Srikanth Bellary et al.

Summary: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing among the aging population, presenting challenges in management due to patient heterogeneity, comorbidities, susceptibility to hypoglycemia, increased dependence on care, and frailty. This review focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms of T2DM in older individuals, new evidence on frailty and sarcopenia, clinical difficulties related to age-associated comorbidities, and implications for guidelines and therapeutic options, highlighting the impact of T2DM on an aging society.
