Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ac Protoxin and Activated Toxin Exert Differential Toxicity Due to a Synergistic Interplay of Cadherin with ABCC Transporters in the Cotton Bollworm

Summary: A better understanding of the mode of action of Bacillus thuringiensis toxins is beneficial for sustainable application of Bt crops. This study provides new insights into the toxic pathway of Cry proteins in the cotton bollworm. It demonstrates that Cry1Ac protoxin exerts cytotoxicity against insect cells expressing ABCC transporters and CAD plays a critical role in the different toxicity of protoxin and toxin by facilitating a synergistic interplay with ABCC transporters. These findings could enhance efficacy and durability of Bt-crops.

Summary: In this study, immune priming in Galleria mellonella was investigated using Bacillus thuringiensis as an elicitor. The intensity of immune priming was found to be positively correlated with levels of antimicrobial peptides and phagocytosis ability. Metabolomic analysis revealed significant changes in metabolic pathways, especially in amino acid biosynthesis and carbon metabolism. The energetic cost of immune priming was observed in the slow growth of body mass and decreased levels of certain energy-related metabolites.
