Development and efficacy of Streptococcus iniae live-attenuated vaccines in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus

Taylor Heckman et al.

Summary: Streptococcus iniae is a re-emerging bacterial pathogen in freshwater and marine aquaculture worldwide. Currently, in the United States, there are no commercial vaccines available for S. iniae, and autogenous vaccines have limited protection. Serial passage of S. iniae in the presence of rifampin may generate immunogenic live-attenuated vaccines that confer protection against heterologous strains.

The Antibacterial Activity of Thymol Against Drug-Resistant Streptococcus iniae and Its Protective Effect on Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)

Lizi Yin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the antibacterial activity and potential mechanism of thymol against Streptococcus iniae. Thymol exhibited potent antibacterial activity, damaging the cell membrane and wall and disrupting DNA replication and transcription in S. iniae. In vivo studies showed that thymol had a protective effect on S. iniae infection, reducing mortality and colonization of the bacteria in tissues, and increasing immune enzyme activities. These findings suggest that thymol may be a candidate agent to replace traditional antibiotics for the prevention and treatment of S. iniae infection.

Stability and Activity of the Antimicrobial Peptide Leg1 in Solution and on Meat and Its Optimized Generation from Chickpea Storage Protein

Marie-Louise Heymich et al.

Summary: The antimicrobial peptide Leg1 derived from chickpea legumin shows stable and effective activity against spoilage bacteria, yeast, and mold under food storage conditions. Its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) remains steady over time and is not affected by pH or temperature changes, suggesting potential for food preservation applications. Additionally, optimizing production methods could significantly increase the yield of Leg1, making it a promising food-grade agent.
