Ccn2a is an injury-induced matricelluar factor that promotes cardiac regeneration in zebrafish

Debanjan Mukherjee et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the gene ccn2a plays a crucial role in regulating heart regeneration in zebrafish after injury, by promoting cardiomyocyte proliferation and repopulation of damaged tissue. Additionally, Ccn2a enhances the expression of pro-regenerative extracellular matrix genes and inhibits the chemokine receptor gene cxcr3.1 to positively modulate the innate regenerative response of the adult zebrafish heart.

Bone morphogenic protein-2 signaling in human disc degeneration and correlation to the Pfirrmann MRI grading system

Alex M. Hollenberg et al.

Summary: Back and neck pain caused by disc degeneration is a major public health burden. This study quantified the expression of ALK3, BMP-2, pSMAD1/5/8, and MMP-13 in patients with disc degeneration and found that the upregulation of BMP-2 and pSMAD1/5/8 expression correlates positively with the degree of disc degeneration.

3D assessment of intervertebral disc degeneration in zebrafish identifies changes in bone density that prime disc disease

Erika Kague et al.

Summary: Back pain is a common condition with high social impact, largely attributed to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). The role of bone mineral density (BMD) in IVDD remains controversial, with genetic components potentially influencing the disease. Using an aging zebrafish model, it was found that increased BMD in aging can lead to changes resembling osteoporosis, and mutations in sp7 and cathepsin K affecting BMD levels also impacted the development of IVDD.

The Role of Polymorphisms in Collagen-Encoding Genes in Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

Vera V. Trefilova et al.

Summary: This review analyzed the role of collagen-encoding genes polymorphism in intervertebral discs degeneration in humans. Candidate genes such as COL1A1, COL2A1, COL9A2, COL9A3, COL11A1, and COL11A2 were found to play a significant role in the genetic basis of collagen degeneration in IVDs. Understanding the etiology of impaired collagen formation can lead to pathogenetically-based treatment for more effective results.

ETV4 and ETV5 drive synovial sarcoma through cell cycle and DUX4 embryonic pathway control

Joanna DeSalvo et al.

Summary: The fusion gene SS18-SSX in synovial sarcoma activates the FGFR signaling pathway, with FGFR1, FGFR2, and FGFR3 being crucial for tumor growth. ETV4 and ETV5 act as drivers of synovial sarcoma growth by controlling the cell cycle, and their knockdown leads to activation of the DUX4 pathway, promoting tumor growth.
