Reaction heterogeneity in the bridging effect of divalent cations on polysaccharide fouling

Shujuan Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bridging effect of divalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) on polysaccharide fouling. Results showed that Ca2+ alleviated alginate fouling at high concentrations, while Mg2+ worsened membrane fouling caused by alginate compared to Ca2+ at all ion concentrations.

Adsorption isotherms and kinetics for the removal of algal organic matter by granular activated carbon

Ziming Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the relative removal efficiency of AOM and humic acid by granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption was determined through batch experiments. The adsorption data fit Freundlich isotherm models and pseudo-second order kinetic models well. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that GAC adsorption for DOM removal was endothermic and spontaneous.

Effect of Na+ on organic fouling depends on Na+ concentration and the property of the foulants

Yuanxin Zhai et al.

Summary: This study compared the adsorption behaviors of typical organics and the fouling effect on a polyvinylidene fluoride membrane surface under different Na+ concentrations, and investigated the impact of structural variation on these behaviors. The results indicate that the impact of Na+ on organics depends on their charge and structure. Different organics exhibited different changes in interaction force and relative irreversibility with the membrane at different Na+ concentrations.

The molecular structures of polysaccharides affect their reverse osmosis membrane fouling behaviors

Xin Tong et al.

Summary: This study found that the molecular structure rather than molecular weight of polysaccharides influenced the fouling behavior of reverse osmosis membranes. Branched-chain polysaccharides were more likely to cause severe membrane fouling and form thicker foulant layers on membrane surfaces compared to straight-chain polysaccharides. Additionally, the presence of Ca2+ had a significant impact on the fouling behavior of straight-chain acid polysaccharides but not on branched-chain polysaccharides or neutral polysaccharides.

Efficacy of selected pretreatment processes in the mitigation of low-pressure membrane fouling and its correlation to their removal of microbial DOM

Panitan Jutaporn et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of five pretreatment processes in reducing UF membrane fouling in water purification, with alum and ferric chloride coagulation found to be the most effective. The research also indicated that microbially-derived DOM is a major contributor to UF membrane fouling.

Effects of -COOH and -NH2 on adsorptive polysaccharide fouling under varying pH conditions: Contributing factors and underlying mechanisms

Yifan Wang et al.

Summary: The impact of -COOH and -NH2 functional groups on polysaccharide fouling of a membrane surface was investigated at different pH values. Increase in pH led to reduced deposition of -COOH-rich organics, alleviating fouling and its irreversibility, whereas it resulted in more severe polysaccharide fouling for -NH2 functional group. Graphene oxide modification alleviated adsorptive fouling of these two polysaccharides on PVDF, dependent on the abundance of functional groups.

The structural and functional properties of polysaccharide foulants in membrane fouling

Xianghao Meng et al.

Summary: The spatial configuration of polysaccharide foulant is significant in membrane fouling, controlling the resistance of gel layer formed on the membrane. Polysaccharides with different properties show distinct fouling mechanisms in accordance with Hermia's models. Cations may change the interaction of polysaccharide foulant, leading to structural changes in the gel layer.
