Robust MOF-derived carbon-supported bimetallic Ni-Co catalysts for aqueous phase hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin

Yunpeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of a hierarchical flower-like nitrogen-doped carbon layer-coated bimetallic Ni-Co nanoparticles (NixCo@NC@C) for catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of biomass. The as-fabricated Ni3Co@NC@C catalyst demonstrates superior catalytic activity and high structural stability due to the presence of abundant defective oxygen vacancies and electron-rich Co-0 species on its surface. The findings provide a promising strategy for constructing low-cost and robust carbon-supported bimetallic catalysts for the HDO of lignin-derived derivatives.

Alcohol-assisted hydrodeoxygenation as a sustainable and cost-effective pathway for biomass derivatives upgrading

Hao Xu et al.

Summary: This review critically summarizes the potentials and challenges of alcohol-assisted hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) strategy from diverse perspectives including safety, economics, and catalytic efficiency. The alcohol-assisted strategy is divided into combined reforming-HDO route and catalytic transfer hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis (CTH) route based on the discrepancies of in-situ hydrogen generation. Different catalytic behaviors are described and their applications are elaborated in several upgrading processes of representative biomass model compounds, aiming to illustrate the potentials of alcohol-assisted HDO in biomass utilization.
