Sterically demanding macrocyclic Eu(iii) complexes for selective recognition of phosphate and real-time monitoring of enzymatically generated adenosine monophosphate

Samantha E. Bodman et al.

Summary: The design of macrocyclic Eu(iii) receptors capable of selectively sensing inorganic phosphate and AMP in water has been reported. The receptors exclude interfering chelating anions and exhibit a sensing selectivity order of AMP > ADP > ATP, which is different from most reported nucleoside phosphate receptors. The host-guest induced changes in emission intensity and lifetime have been exploited for the detection of inorganic phosphate in human serum samples and for monitoring the enzymatic production of AMP in real-time.

Transition metal complex-based smart AIEgens explored for cancer diagnosis and theranostics

Lili Ma et al.

Summary: Bioimaging plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Among various bioimaging technologies, aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have been extensively explored to overcome the limitations of conventional luminophores. In particular, transition metal complex-based AIEgens (TM-AIEgens) combine the advantages of organic AIEgens and transition metal centers, offering improved photophysical performance and therapeutic outcomes. This review highlights recent advances in the application of TM-AIEgens for cancer diagnosis and theranostics, covering cancer cell imaging, tumor microenvironment-responsive imaging, biological process-activated imaging, tumor tissue-localized imaging, as well as various image-guided therapies such as chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), radiotherapy, and combination therapy. The structure design, generation mechanism of AIE activity, and diagnostic/theranostic performance are discussed for each example, along with current challenges and opportunities in TM-AIEgens research.

Ruthenium(II) Polypyridine Complex-Based Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogen for Rapid and Selective Detection of Phosgene in Solution and in the Gas Phase

Bhaskar Sen et al.

Summary: A bis-heteroleptic ruthenium(II) complex, Ru-1, with 4,7-bis(2-aminoethylamino)-1,10-phenanthroline is presented for the selective turn-on detection of highly toxic chemical warfare agent phosgene. The complex exhibits aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and forms a unique self-assembled vesicular structure after aggregation. The reaction with phosgene leads to the formation of the product Ru-1-Phos, confirming the reaction mechanism and enhancing luminescence.

Luminescence Detection of Ag+ and Phosphate Ions by a Ruthenium(II) Complex-Based Multianalyte Probe: A Combined Spectroscopic, Crystallographic, and Theoretical Approach

Bhaskar Sen et al.

Summary: A bis-heteroleptic Ru(II) complex has been developed for the photoluminescence detection of phosphate and Ag+ ions in different solvents with significant PL enhancement. The PL enhancement is attributed to triazole C-H...anion H-bonding interaction for phosphate ions and unique Ag(I)-triazolide complex formation for Ag+ ion detection. Triplet state TDDFT calculations explain the PL enhancement and the probe also shows low cytotoxicity against Hela cells and can be used for intracellular Ag+ imaging.
