A Comparative Study on the Accuracy of IOL Calculation Formulas in Nanophthalmos and Relative Anterior Microphthalmos

Peimin Lin et al.

Summary: This study compared the prediction accuracy of 6 intraocular lens (IOL) formulas in microphthalmic eyes. The results showed that the Haigis formula was the most accurate in cataract patients with nanophthalmos, and the Barrett Universal II formula had the highest accuracy in cataract patients with relative anterior microphthalmos.

Treatment of Nanophthalmos-Related Uveal Effusion with Two- vs. Four-Quadrant Partial-Thickness Sclerectomy and Sclerotomy Surgery

Sengul Ozdek et al.

Summary: Quadrantic partial-thickness sclerectomy and sclerotomy surgery is an effective treatment for uveal effusion associated with nanophthalmos. The surgery can significantly improve visual acuity and achieve retinal reattachment, although secondary surgery may be needed for complete reattachment. The final outcome is mainly complete retinal reattachment.

Accuracy of newer intraocular lens power formulas in short and long eyes using sum-of-segments biometry

H. John Shammas et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the accuracy of newer intraocular lens power formulas in long and short eyes measured using the sum-of-segments biometry. The results showed that the BTAL, EVO, Hoffer QST, K6, Olsen, and PEARL-DGS formulas performed the best in short and long eyes.

Cataract surgery and the small eye: relative anterior microphthalmos, high hyperopia and nanophthalmos

Gerd U. Auffarth et al.

Summary: This article discusses the morphological relationships between the anterior segment and axis length in relative anterior microphthalmos, nanophthalmos, and high-grade hyperopia. It also addresses the challenges and surgical approaches for cataract operations in patients with these conditions, as well as possible comorbidities and preoperative planning.

Uveal Effusion Syndrome: Clinical Characteristics, Outcome of Surgical Treatment, and Histopathological Examination of the Sclera

Nan Zhou et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics and histopathology of uveal effusion syndrome (UES) and evaluate the surgical outcomes of quadrantic lamellar-sclerectomy with sclerostomy. The study found that quadrantic lamellar-sclerectomy with sclerostomy is an effective treatment for UES and can improve visual acuity.

Clinical spectrum and treatment outcomes of patients with nanophthalmos

Sharmila Rajendrababu et al.

Summary: The study focused on the demographic, visual, and clinical characteristics of patients with nanophthalmos, showing a diverse range of age, higher proportion of females, common visual impairment and amblyopia, along with prevalent angle closure disease and glaucoma. Surgical management, especially cataract surgery, was challenging with significant impact on complications.

Cataract Surgery in Short Eyes, Including Nanophthalmos: Visual Outcomes, Complications and Refractive Results

Jason C. Yosar et al.

Summary: The study reported the visual outcomes, complications, and refractive results of phacoemulsification surgery and intraocular lens implantation in a large series of adult patients. Results showed improvements in corrected distance visual acuity and postoperative refraction, but with a higher rate of complications in short and nanophthalmic eyes.

A comparative study on endothelial cell loss in nanophthalmic eyes undergoing cataract surgery by phacoemulsification

Sharmila Rajendrababu et al.

Summary: The study found that the percentage of endothelial cell loss in nanophthalmic eyes undergoing cataract surgery is equivalent to normal eyes, but nanophthalmic eyes with an anterior chamber depth (ACD) <2.5mm experienced significantly higher cell loss post-surgery. Increasing age was identified as the only significant risk factor influencing the endothelial cell density in short eyes.
