Biophysical properties of tear film lipid layer II. Polymorphism of FAHFA

Xiaojie Xu et al.

Summary: Fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs) are a newly discovered class of lipids that include (O-acyl)-w-hydroxy fatty acids (OAHFAs). OAHFAs have been found to be an important component of the tear film lipid layer (TFLL), but their biophysical function in TFLL is still poorly understood. This study investigated the molecular biophysical mechanisms of OAHFAs using PAHSA as a model and found unique polymorphic behaviors and configurational transitions of PAHSA molecules under various lateral pressures.

Ion Pairing and Molecular Orientation at Liquid/Liquid Interfaces: Self-Assembly and Function

Lu Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular orientation at buried oil/aqueous interfaces using vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy, numerical polarization analysis, and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the orientation of self-assembled oligomers changes upon the addition of salts in the aqueous phase, attributed to competitive ion effects altering the orientations of the tails extending into the oil phase. These specific anionic effects occur via interfacial ion pairing and associated changes in interfacial solvation and hydrogen-bonding networks. These findings offer quantitative insight into orientational changes during self-assembly, facilitating the design of functional interfaces for various applications.

Squeezing Out Interfacial Solvation: The Role of Hydrogen-Bonding in the Structural and Orientational Freedom of Molecular Self-Assembly

Zening Liu et al.

Summary: Bioinspired membrane molecules with improved physical properties and enhanced stability can serve as functional models for conventional lipid or amphiphilic species. The self-assembly of amphiphilic, charged oligodimethylsiloxane imidazolium cation at the air-aqueous interface is elucidated using Langmuir trough methods and surface-specific vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy. A compression-induced desolvation step is found to precede phase transitions, and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations support the experimental data. The understanding of hydrophobic tail conformations offers new strategies for interface design in developing soft-matter electronics and low-dimensional materials.

Disentangling Memristive and Memcapacitive Effects in Droplet Interface Bilayers Using Dynamic Impedance Spectroscopy

Robert L. Sacci et al.

Summary: This study investigates biomimetic neuromorphic equivalents based on biological membranes using dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (dEIS) to explore the molecular-level structural and dynamic differences that give rise to memristive and memcapacitive behaviors in response to electrical biasing. The research findings show that the system's memristive and memcapacitive properties originate from different molecular restructuring processes, and can be simultaneously achieved in a single device.

Xiaoying Zhang et al.

Summary: At pH 2.0-8.0, the interaction between SPI and WPI at the interface resulted in unstable emulsions, while at pH 8.0-11.0, electrostatic repulsion between the proteins led to stable emulsions. This study provides insights for pH treatment selection of SPI-WPI composite emulsions with different stabilities and rheological behaviors, and potential applications for bioactive compound delivery systems.

Responsive Interfacial Assemblies Based on Charge-Transfer Interactions

Shuyi Sun et al.

Summary: Charge transfer interactions are commonly used in constructing supramolecular systems, but the formation of CT complexes at the liquid-liquid interface has not been reported until now. By utilizing electron-deficient acceptors in water and electron-rich donors in oil, CT complex surfactants can be formed and assembled at the oil-water interface, ultimately leading to the creation of higher-order nanofilms with exceptional mechanical properties. The redox-responsiveness of the electron-deficient acceptor allows for reversible manipulation of the assembly and disassembly of CTCSs, offering the potential for switchable structures in liquids.

Effect of nanoparticle surfactants on droplet formation in a flow-focusing microchannel

Jie Qi et al.

Summary: Nanoparticle surfactants formed by interactions between nanoparticles and complementary polymers have been proposed as excellent stabilizers for liquid droplets in substance encapsulation and delivery applications. This study found that adding carboxylated nanoparticles to the dispersed phase and amino-terminated polymers to the continuous phases significantly reduces droplet size while increasing production rate. The combined effect of nanoparticles and polymers is greater than the sum of their individual effects due to the reduction of oil-water interfacial tension by nanoparticle surfactants.

Summary: This study demonstrated the synthesis of spherical silver nanoparticles with a diameter of 9.4 nm stabilized by a non-ionic surfactant, and their high electrokinetic potential allowing for the concentration of silver organosols through non-aqueous electrophoresis. Mirror-like silver films with high silver content (up to 96%) and varying thicknesses were successfully produced by heat treatment of the concentrates at specific temperatures.
