Epidemiology, Etiology, and Treatment of Gastroparesis: Real-World Evidence From a Large US National Claims Database

Yizhou Ye et al.

Summary: This study utilized a large US claims database to investigate the prevalence, patient demographics, and disease etiology of gastroparesis in the US population. It found that diabetes was the most common etiology of gastroparesis and patients had a high comorbidity burden. Wider availability of objective gastric emptying measures and education for medical professionals are needed to improve understanding of gastroparesis epidemiology.

Harnessing Intranasal Delivery Systems of Sumatriptan for the Treatment of Migraine

Sara Assadpour et al.

Summary: This study reviews novel delivery systems for intranasal administration of sumatriptan, a commonly prescribed drug for migraine treatment. The oral route of administration has complications, and intranasal administration has been shown to be fast-acting and effective. The use of new delivery systems can improve the bioavailability and effectiveness of sumatriptan. However, further clinical studies are necessary.

Long-term Outcome of Gastric Per-Oral Endoscopic Pyloromyotomy in Treatment of Gastroparesis

Mohamed M. Abdelfatah et al.

Summary: A retrospective analysis of 90 patients who underwent GPOEM for refractory gastroparesis showed that 81.1% had a clinical response at initial follow-up. One year after GPOEM, 69.1% of all patients had a clinical response and 85.2% of initial responders maintained a clinical response. Patients maintained a clinical response and improved quality of life for as long as 3 years after the procedure, with high BMI and long duration gastroparesis associated with failure of GPOEM.

The prevalence and impact of migraine and severe headache in the United States: Updated age, sex, and socioeconomic-specific estimates from government health surveys

Rebecca Burch et al.

Summary: Accurate estimates of the burden of migraine and severe headache are crucial for evidence-based decision-making about workforce needs and health resource distribution. The prevalence of migraine in the US has remained stable, with a higher impact in women of childbearing age and those of lower socioeconomic status. Many adults with migraine or severe headaches are disadvantaged, highlighting the need for improved funding for treatment provision and research to reduce the future burden of disease.

Predominant role of gut-vagus-brain neuronal pathway in postoperative nausea and vomiting: evidence from an observational cohort study

Nana Li et al.

Summary: By comparing patients undergoing different surgical procedures, it was found that those who underwent vagotomy had a lower incidence of PONV, suggesting that gut-brain signaling via the vagus nerve may play a predominant role in PONV.
