Sleep spindles track cortical learning patterns for memory consolidation

Sleep-Specific Processing of Auditory Stimuli Is Reflected by Alpha and Sigma Oscillations

Summary: Recent research has found that a wide range of cognitive operations are preserved during sleep in humans. This challenges scientists to understand the functions and mechanisms of these processes, which have mainly been studied in awake individuals. In this study, the focus is on the dynamic changes of brain oscillations and connectivity patterns in response to environmental stimulation during non-REM sleep. The results show that aurally presented names were processed and differentiated by neurons across the wake-sleep spectrum. EEG and MEG signals recorded simultaneously revealed two distinct clusters of oscillatory power increase in response to the stimuli. This study discusses the possible roles of different oscillations during non-REM sleep and aims to develop a unified theory of brain rhythms and their functions during sleep.

Slow oscillations promote long-range effective communication: The key for memory consolidation in a broken-down network

Summary: Slow oscillations (SOs) play a critical role in strengthening memories during nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. NREM sleep generally has weak neural communication, but SOs provide two windows of enhanced communication. Communication peaks are significantly higher when SOs are coupled with sleep spindles. Global, long-range communication during SOs promotes sleep-dependent consolidation of episodic memories. Peaks of information flow are significantly correlated with memory improvement, indicating predictive validity of our measurements. SOs act as a gating mechanism for large-scale neural communication, facilitating systems consolidation and long-term memory formation during a low connectivity sleep state.
