The calcium-mediated homogalacturonan pectin complexation in cell walls contributes the firmness increase in loquat fruit during postharvest storage

Weinan Huang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the changes in pectin and its complexation in the cell wall of lignified loquat fruit during postharvest storage and investigated their influence on fruit firmness. The results showed that the demethylesterification mediated by pectin methylesterase generated low-methylesterified pectin, which further cross-linked with calcium ions to form egg-box structures, contributing to the increased firmness in loquat fruit.

Comparative study of the effects of selenium yeast and sodium selenite on selenium content and nutrient quality in broccoli florets (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica)

Jia-Ying Gui et al.

Summary: The study found that in selenium-rich broccoli cultivation, selenium yeast is preferred for maximizing selenium uptake and nutrient accumulation; selenium yeast and selenite have different influences on the nutrient composition of broccoli florets, with selenium yeast increasing total phenolic acid and glucosinolate content, but reducing total flavonoid content.

Foliar selenium fertilization alters the content of dietary phytochemicals in two rocket species

Michela Schiavon et al.

Summary: Biofortification is a process that aims to enrich crops with micronutrients and valuable compounds. Selenium biofortification has gained increasing interest due to the rise in Se deficiency. This study investigated the effects of foliar Se application on two rocket species grown in soil and compared the results with hydroponic supplementation. The metabolic responses varied between species and doses of Se.

Effect of Temperature on Soluble Solids Content in Strawberry in Queensland, Australia

Christopher Michael Menzel

Summary: Warmer conditions under climate change affect the development of strawberries and their soluble solids content (SSC), as shown in a study conducted in Queensland, Australia. The research findings are consistent with studies in temperate and Mediterranean climates, indicating that higher temperatures can lead to lower fruit quality in subtropical locations.

Improving the foliar biofortification of broccoli with selenium without commercial quality losses

Fernando Felipe Munoz et al.

Summary: Selenium treatments through foliar application of sodium selenate and sodium selenite can significantly increase the fresh weight of the heads of Belstar broccoli cultivar and improve water use efficiency without altering the dry matter content. The treatments also maintain the green color of the heads and result in a dose-dependent increase in selenium content.
