The Valanginian Weissert Event on the south Tethyan margin: A dynamic paleoceanographic evolution based on the study of calcareous nannofossils

M. Shmeit et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed the paleoceanographic conditions during the Valanginian Weissert oceanic anoxic event using calcareous nannofossils. The results revealed the relationship between paleoceanographic conditions, sea-level variations, clastic input, and nutrient availability. The nannofossil community was significantly affected by the Weissert Event, with a collapse and subsequent recovery associated with changes in sea-level and surface-water fertility.

The Berriasian-Valanginian boundary in the Mediterranean Province of the Tethyan Realm: Ammonite and calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy of the Vergol section (Montbrun-les-Bains, SE France), candidate for the Valanginian GSSP

Samer Kenjo et al.

Summary: The Vergol locality in South-East France is a candidate section for the Valanginian GSSP, where a detailed study of ammonites and calcareous nannofossils was carried out to define the Berriasian-Valanginian boundary. The base of the Valanginian is defined by the First Appearance Datum of T. pertransiens, with a discussion proposed on the choice of primary marker for the Valanginian GSSP.

Geochronology of the Parana-Etendeka large igneous province

Allan Silva Gomes et al.

Summary: Constraining the timing of large igneous provinces is crucial for evaluating their petrogenetic evolution and potential links to mass extinctions. The Parana-Etendeka continental flood basalts erupted during the Early Cretaceous, lasting approximately 1.6-3.0 million years and possibly temporally connected to the Weissert event.
