Design optimization and thermal storage characteristics of NaNO3-NaCl-NaF molten salts with high latent heat and low cost for the thermal energy storage

Xing Lai et al.

Summary: NaNO3-NaCl-NaF salts were investigated and their thermodynamic parameters and properties were obtained. The salts showed excellent agreement between predicted and experimental melting points, high thermal stability, and low cost for thermal energy storage. These characteristics make them a potential candidate for thermal energy storage fluids.

Metallic impurities induced corrosion of a Ni-26W-6Cr alloy in molten fluoride salts at 850 °C

Hua Ai et al.

Summary: The study found that metallic impurities can accelerate the diffusion of Cr in Ni-26W-6Cr alloy, affecting the corrosion degree of the alloy. Additionally, the presence of Mo impurities in the salts can lead to unexpected depletion of W in the alloy.

Effect of Chloride Impurity on Corrosion Kinetics of Stainless Steels in Molten Solar Salt for CSP Application: Experiments and Modeling

Heng Li et al.

Summary: This study confirmed through experiments that as the chloride content in solar salt increases, the corrosion rate of stainless steel increases, with 316L stainless steel showing better corrosion resistance compared to 304 stainless steel. Additionally, a novel theoretical model based on Fick's first law was proposed to successfully describe the effect of chloride impurities on the corrosion kinetics of stainless steels.

Electrochemical study of the dissolution of oxide films grown on type 316L stainless steel in molten fluoride salt

Jie Qiu et al.

Summary: The study found that the oxide film formed on Type 316L stainless steel in molten FLiNaK salt is unstable and can only provide temporary corrosion protection. After the dissolution of the oxide film, selective dealloying of Cr and Fe from the steel leads to intergranular corrosion of Type 316L SS in molten fluoride salt.

Summary: The molten salt corrosion performance of a Y2O3-strengthened Ni-Cr alloy was compared to purpose-designed Ni-Mo-Cr molten-salt resistant alloys. The role of Y2O3 dispersoids in corrosion performance was found to be minor, suggesting the potential for developing low Cr-content ODS alloys with combined high-temperature properties and good molten salt corrosion resistance.

Corrosion behavior of carburized 316 stainless steel in molten chloride salts

Sen Ren et al.

Summary: In a high-temperature chloride salt environment, carburized 316 stainless steel with added Mg metal exhibits more severe intergranular corrosion compared to regular 316 stainless steel, mainly due to the influence of metallic ions in the salt on the dissolution of Fe and Cr on the alloy surface.

Corrosion and electrochemical investigations for stainless steels in molten Solar Salt: The influence of chloride impurity

Heng Li et al.

Summary: The presence of chloride impurity in molten Solar Salt at 565 degrees C significantly increases the corrosion rates of stainless steels, enhancing the aggressiveness of the environment by producing oxidants and causing the oxide scale to spall, accelerating the corrosion process through a synergy effect of active oxidation and spallation.
