High-entropy alloys with heterogeneous microstructure: Processing and mechanical properties

Praveen Sathiyamoorthi et al.

Summary: Engineering metallic materials with excellent mechanical properties, especially strength and ductility, are highly sought after for various applications. Novel approaches to enhance strength-ductility synergy through heterogeneous microstructures have proven effective in overcoming the traditional strength-ductility trade-off. The discovery of high entropy alloys based on multi-principal elements offers wider possibilities for alloy design and the exploration of new alloys with remarkable properties.

Achieving excellent mechanical properties in type 316 stainless steel by tailoring grain size in homogeneously recovered or recrystallized nanostructures

Maowen Liu et al.

Summary: One way to achieve good comprehensive mechanical properties in metallic materials is to create a homogeneous nanocrystalline or ultrafine grained structure with low dislocation density. In this study, high pressure torsion deformation and annealing were used to obtain uniform microstructures with various grain sizes in 316 stainless steel. The scarcity of dislocations in the nanocrystalline/ultrafine grained regions resulted in significant enhancement in strength, in addition to the normal grain boundary hardening. The material exhibited outstanding mechanical performance, including high yield strength and exceptional strength-ductility synergy.

Enhanced synergy of strength-ductility and low-cycle fatigue resistance of high-entropy alloy through harmonic structure design

Zhe Zhang et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous structured materials show unprecedented performances compared to homogeneous structured materials. In this study, harmonic structured high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with different shell fractions were prepared, and the effects of shell fraction on mechanical properties and low-cycle fatigue (LCF) performances were investigated at room temperature. The results show that harmonic structured HEAs with a shell fraction between 20% and 40% exhibit a combination of superior strength-ductility synergy and good LCF resistance.

Enhanced pitting resistance through designing a high-strength 316L stainless steel with heterostructure

Jiansheng Li et al.

Summary: By utilizing a high-strength 316L stainless steel with heterostructure, the corrosion properties in a 3.5wt.% NaCl solution were explored, showing an enhanced pitting resistance compared to conventional samples. This improvement was attributed to the interruption of stable corrosion pits propagation by the ultrafine/nano-structures surrounding the recrystallized grains. This study may offer a new approach to enhancing corrosion properties through heterostructural designing.

Effect of the grain size on the corrosion behavior of CoCrFeMnNi HEAs in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of the CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy depends on the grain size. Fine-grained HEA promotes galvanic corrosion at grain boundaries, while coarse-grained HEA lacks ionic diffusion channels for a stable passive film. Medium-grained HEA shows improved chemical stability and mechanical strength of passive films.

Enhanced mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel by pre-forming a gradient nanostructured surface layer and annealing

Y. B. Lei et al.

Summary: By pre-forming a gradient nanostructured (GNS) surface layer on 316L stainless steel and subsequently annealing, the strength-ductility synergy was enhanced while maintaining stable grain size and hardness in the GNS layer, and significantly improved corrosion resistance due to Cr-enrichment. This approach provides a new pathway for developing stainless steels with enhanced mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Effect of grain size on the corrosion behavior of fully recrystallized ultra-fine grained 316L stainless steel fabricated by high-energy ball milling and hot isostatic pressing sintering

Lixi Tian et al.

Summary: The study found that samples with finer grain sizes had stronger re-passivate ability, but the influence of grain size on pitting potential was insignificant, and passive film even seemed to become susceptible to cathodic polarization when grains were refined to sub-micron scale. There were many contradictory conclusions in relevant studies regarding the relationship between grain size and corrosion behaviors.
