Effect of intermetallic compounds on the mechanical property and corrosion behaviour of aluminium alloy/steel hybrid fusion-brazed welded structure

Hong Ma et al.

Summary: Different heat inputs during fusion-brazing welding can affect the thickness of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) layer in Al alloy/steel joints, including the formation of Fe-Al binary IMCs and Fe-Al-Si ternary IMCs. Welding under high heat input may lead to enhanced tunnelling corrosion and increase corrosion current density, while higher heat input can reduce corrosion of binary IMCs due to cathodic corrosion protection. Utilizing low heat input can preserve the corrosion resistance and mechanical performance of the joint.

Pitting behavior of 316L stainless steel in direct culture with mesenchymal stem cells

Jing Wu et al.

Summary: Corrosion is a major reason for the failure of metallic implants. The presence of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can decrease the stability of 316 L stainless steels (316 L SS), leading to preferential pitting corrosion initiation at the peripheries of BMSCs.

Tuning the pitting performance of a Cr-13 type martensitic stainless steel by tempering time

Feng Yuan et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolution and pitting performance of Cr-13 type martensitic stainless steel tempered at 500°C for different times were studied. Severe corrosion was observed when tempering was done within 2-24 hours, while passivation was recovered when tempering time was increased to 48 hours or longer. The research provides a new approach to optimizing the corrosion resistance of martensitic stainless steels through tempering time.

Identification of the critical microstructural parameters on the corrosion behaviour of commercially pure aluminium alloy

A. Ingle et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in the density of high-angle grain boundaries can decrease the corrosion current of commercially pure Al alloy in chloride-sulphate solution, while intermetallic particles may act as pit initiation sites. In addition, the propagation of pits is strongly influenced by the density of high-angle grain boundaries.

Synergistic inhibition mechanism of phosphate and phytic acid on carbon steel in carbonated concrete pore solutions containing chlorides

Yongqi Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synergistic inhibition performance of trisodium phosphate and phytic acid on chloride-induced corrosion of Q235 carbon steel in carbonated concrete pore solutions using various techniques. The mixed inhibitor showed high inhibition efficiency due to the formation of a protective oxide film, but excessive phytic acid content competed with trisodium phosphate, leading to reduced inhibition efficiencies.

Time-varying electrochemically heterogeneous entities during the micro-galvanic corrosion associated with nanoscale precipitates in an Al-Cu-Li alloy

Ying Jiang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the time-dependent behavior of electrochemically heterogeneous entities involved in the micro-galvanic corrosion of T-1 precipitates in AA2195 alloy. The findings show a Li-leaching process in the anodic T-1 precipitates at the sub-nanometer scales, leading to a transformation of the micro-galvanic couples and resulting in corrosion of the matrix with Al-selective dissolution. The corroded bands parallel to {111}(alpha) planes then develop into gross pitting driven by solution acidification and redeposition of thermodynamically nobler Cu, forming Cu-matrix couples.

New insights on the initial local corrosion of composite Al7Cu2Fe/Al20Cu2Mn3 intermetallic particles in 2024-T351 aluminum alloy

Qiyao He et al.

Summary: The study found that regions with long-range ordered structure in composite Al7Cu2Fe/Al20Cu2Mn3 intermetallic particles are the initial sites of local corrosion, and dealloying at the Al7Cu2Fe/Al20Cu2Mn3 interface increases the local potential difference, triggering anodic dissolution of the Al20Cu2Mn3 phase. This study provides new insights into the initiation and propagation mechanism of localized corrosion in composite IMPs.

Ultra-high corrosion resistance of Al-Mg-Si film on steel sheet formed by PVD Mg coating and heat treatment

Gi-Dong Park et al.

Summary: Alloy films with excellent corrosion resistance were fabricated by depositing an Mg film on Al-Si coated steel sheets and applying heat treatment. The Mg in the film was widely distributed in a dissolved state on the AI phase and continuously involved in the corrosion product formation reaction, leading to the excellent barrier effect against corrosion factors. The corrosion resistance evaluation results were explained by analyzing the properties of the alloy film and the mechanism of forming corrosion products.

Galvanic corrosion behavior of friction stir welded AZ31B magnesium alloy and 6N01 aluminum alloy dissimilar joints

Yu-Jui Lin et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior and corrosion rate of friction stir welded AZ31B magnesium alloy and 6N01 aluminum alloy dissimilar joints were studied using real-time imaging, potentiodynamic polarization, EIS, and hydrogen evolution tests. The corrosion rate was found to increase in the order of Al base metal < Mg base metal < stirred zone. The galvanic coupling of the Mg phase to other phases enhanced the corrosion of both base metals, and intense corrosion at BM-AZ31B elevated the interfacial pH due to water reduction on the cathodic particles of BM-6N01.

Comprehending the role of individual microstructural features on electrochemical response and passive film behaviour in type 304 austenitic stainless steel

S. K. Pradhan et al.

Summary: The individual implications of sensitization, grain size, residual strain, and grain boundary characteristics on the semiconducting response of passive film in 304 stainless steel were investigated. Higher donor densities in the sensitized specimen deteriorated passive film stability, while a greater density of random grain boundaries promoted defect formation in the film. In contrast, a higher fraction of 'special' boundaries and triple junctions, achieved through grain boundary engineering, suppressed defect formation and enhanced passive film protection.

A survey on the passivity of tempered AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel

Khashayar Morshed-Behbahani et al.

Summary: The research found that samples with less internal stress formed denser and less defective passive films on their surfaces, attributed to higher concentration of metal ions at the metal/solution interface during anodization process. Prolonged passivation times resulted in more impurities being incorporated into the growing passive film, deteriorating its electrochemical properties.

Galvanic corrosion behavior between AZ91D magnesium alloy and copper in distilled water

Wenlu Yang et al.

Summary: The galvanic corrosion behavior between AZ91D magnesium alloy and copper in distilled water was studied through electrochemical methods and surface characterization. The results revealed that the potential difference between coupled metals is more suitable for calculating the galvanic current density, and the galvanic effect between them enhances the corrosion of AZ91D magnesium alloy while reducing the protection of corrosion product film. The galvanic current density increases with higher temperature and soaking time, possibly due to the destruction of cathodic hydrogen evolution on the corrosion product film.

Effects of rare earth modifying inclusions on the pitting corrosion of 13Cr4Ni martensitic stainless steel

Changgang Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the pitting corrosion behavior of martensitic stainless steel with and without rare earth modification in NaCl solution. The presence of different inclusions in BASE and REM steels affected the pitting resistance, with REM steel showing both increased susceptibility to pitting nucleation and improved repassivation. The concentration of rare earth elements in the steel matrix influenced the number and size of inclusions, ultimately affecting the overall pitting corrosion resistance.

A. P. Babu et al.

Summary: The research examined an additively manufactured aluminium alloy with high solute content, Al-14Zn-3Mg, which showed lower corrosion rate compared to a conventional wrought alloy, AA7075-T6. This difference was attributed to the microstructure and solute content of Al-14Zn-3Mg, specifically the absence of coarse intermetallic particles. Various tests were conducted to analyze the corrosion behavior of this new alloy manufactured through LPBF.
