Hydration and Dehydration in Earth's Interior

Eiji Ohtani

Summary: Based on hydrogen and deuterium isotopic evidence, terrestrial water is mainly sourced from meteorites, with additional influx from nebula gas. There are two Earth models: one with a large water budget and the other with a small water budget. Geophysical and mineral physics data suggest that the upper and lower mantles are generally dry, while the mantle transition zone is wetter.

Hydrogen and hydrocarbons associated with the Neoarchean Frog's Leg Gold Camp, Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia

Christopher J. Boreham et al.

Summary: High concentrations of hydrogen and methane have been detected in the Eastern Goldfields Superterrane, Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia, showing unique molecular and isotopic characteristics, suggesting they are produced by various geological processes. The discovered gases have similarities with abiogenic gases found in overseas Archean cratons, while methane-rich gases associated with lode gold deposits in the region exhibit distinctly different isotopic signatures, indicating different pathways of methane production over time in the Yilgarn Craton.

Multi-stage fluid infiltration and metasomatism in supra-subduction zone mantle: evidence from halogens and noble gases in the Leka Ophiolite Complex, Norway

Elliot J. Carter et al.

Summary: Extreme halogen abundance heterogeneity is observed in the mantle and lower crustal transition zone of the Leka ophiolite in Norway, covering much of the known global range of serpentinite compositions. The coupled analysis of halogens and noble gases in serpentinites reveals insights into the sources of fluids and the relative timing of high- and low-temperature fluid infiltration episodes.
