Fiber-reinforced alkali-activated concrete: A review

Mugahed Amran et al.

Summary: Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) and steel fibers together have great potential in modern construction due to their superior bond strength and good interaction, leading to improved tensile strength and durability. Additional research is needed to further explore the application possibilities of fiber-reinforced alkali-activated concrete (FR-AAC) in different environmental conditions.

Free-draining two-stage microbial fuel cell integrated constructed wetlands development using biomass, construction, and industrial wastes as filter materials: Performance assessment

Tanveer Saeed et al.

Summary: This study investigates the removal performances of organic matter, nutrients, and coliform in two-stage microbial fuel cell (MFC)-based wetlands filled with various waste materials. The results show that different waste materials have different removal efficiencies, and the uptake of pollutants by plants and microbial transformation also contribute to pollutant removal.

Impact of overburnt distorted brick aggregate on the performance of concrete at ambient temperature and after exposure to elevated temperatures

Md Jihad Miah et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical and durability properties of concrete mixes with different replacement percentages of regular brick aggregates (RBA) by overburnt distorted brick aggregates (ODBA), before and after exposure to elevated temperatures. It was found that replacing 75% of RBA with ODBA increased the compressive, splitting tensile strength, and flexural load of the beams, while reducing the porosity of the concrete. However, the compressive strength decreased as the temperature increased.

Eco-friendly concrete with chemically treated end-of-life tires: Mechanical strength, shrinkage, and flexural performance of RC beams

Md Jihad Miah et al.

Summary: The disposal of waste end-of-life vehicle tires is a global environmental issue. This study investigates the performance of clay brick aggregate concrete with treated waste rubber tire aggregate. The experimental results show that the use of untreated waste tire aggregate reduces the mechanical strength and flexural load carrying capacity of the concrete, while treated waste tire aggregate can improve these properties.

Replacing steel stirrups with natural fiber reinforced polymer stirrups in reinforced concrete Beam: Structural and environmental performance

Guocheng Luo et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the feasibility of using environmentally friendly natural fiber reinforced polymer stirrups in reinforced concrete structures in terms of structural performance and environmental impact. The results showed that NFRP stirrups provided sufficient shear capacity and maintained satisfactory ductility, with slightly lower environmental impacts than steel stirrups.

Sustainable Production of Arecanut Husk Ash as Potential Silica Replacement for Synthesis of Silicate-Based Glass-Ceramics Materials

Muhammad Fahmi Anuar et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of using arecanut husk as a replacement for silica in the synthesis of zinc silicate, resulting in a cleaner and more environmentally friendly production of materials. The zinc silicate produced showed promise as phosphors materials after sintering, with increased grain sizes observed.

Steel fiber reinforced concrete: A review of its material properties and usage in tunnel lining

Xiuling Wang et al.

Summary: The complicated tunnelling conditions and variable engineering demands pose challenges for mesh-reinforced lining structures, while SFRC is considered a reliable alternative with good performance and advantages. The application of SFRC in tunnel linings can effectively control rock displacement, reduce lining pressure, and improve the stability of support structures.

The effect of furnace steel slag powder on the performance of cementitious mortar at ambient temperature and after exposure to elevated temperatures

Md Jihad Miah et al.

Summary: Mortars made with steel slag powder (SSP) showed significantly higher mechanical strength and better durability compared to mortar made with 100% natural sand. When SSP entirely replaced natural sand, compressive, tensile, and flexural strength increased by 45%, 72%, and 56% respectively. Porosity, water absorption, and chloride penetration decreased by 42%, 61%, and 52% for 100% SSP mortar, and the shrinkage of the mortar decreased with increasing percentages of SSP.
