Characterization and molecular mechanism of the thermal-oxidative gradient aging behavior in asphalt films

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aging differences of asphalt films in the vertical aggregate direction using a three-layers model and verifies the simulated findings through experiments. The diffusion of oxygen and distribution of four components are found to be more sensitive to pressure. There are significant differences in aging grade and component content of asphalt membranes at different thicknesses, and the combined effects of component volatilization, oxidation reactions, and component migration can lead to changes in the modulus gradient of the asphalt films.

Aging evaluation of base and SBS modified bitumens under the coupling effect of multiple aging factors

Song Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aging behaviors of bitumen under the coupling effect of multiple aging factors. The results indicate that elevated aging temperature, prolonged aging time, and coupled aging inducements accelerate the aging process. UV radiation and moisture play important roles in the aging of bitumen and should not be neglected in laboratory aging simulations.

Influence of thermal aging and long term-aging on Ni and V content in asphalt fractions and their determination in air particulate matter from asphalt mixing plants

Franciele Rovasi Adolfo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes of Ni and V during asphalt aging and found that they played an important role in the deterioration of asphalt. Thermal aging and compound volatilization were identified as the main reasons for the losses of Ni and V. Additionally, the production of asphalt mixtures contributed to air pollution through the emission of Ni and V compounds.

Performance and mechanism of lignin and quercetin as bio-based anti-aging agents for asphalt binder: A combined experimental and ab initio study

Dongliang Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism by which lignin competitively blocks the asphalt aging pathway and proposed structural modifications to improve its anti-aging capability. Experimental and theoretical methods were employed to reveal the aging mechanism of asphalt and the anti-aging mechanism of lignin and quercetin. The results suggest that modifying the structure of lignin to lower its molecular weight and increase the content of phenolic hydroxyls can enhance its anti-aging activity.
