Investigation on microstructure and aging resistance of bitumen modified by zinc oxide/expanded vermiculite composite synthesized with different methods

Haihui Duan et al.

Summary: In this study, ZnO/EVMT composite was synthesized using a modified sol-gel method and hydrolytic precipitation method. The effects of these two synthesis methods on the microstructure of the composite and its corresponding modified bitumen were characterized. Results showed that the hydrolytic precipitation method produced ZnO/EVMT composite with higher crystallinity and purity, more homogeneous distribution of ZnO particles, higher UV absorption capacity, and better bituminous compatibility. Modified bitumen with HP-ZnO/EVMT had stronger aging resistance than that with SG-ZnO/EVMT regardless of the aging conditions.

Unified characterizing fatigue performance of rubberized asphalt mixtures subjected to different loading modes

Chengdong Xia et al.

Summary: The study aims to improve the procedure for determining the structural resistance of rubber asphalt pavement. Various strength tests were conducted to reveal the velocity-dependent behavior of rubber asphalt mixture, leading to the proposal of a new method considering the influence of loading rate for calculating the strength structure coefficient. The effectiveness and completeness of pavement structure mechanical behavior were enhanced, which can significantly increase the utilization rate of waste rubber for pavement construction and reduce the life cycle cost of asphalt pavement.

Effects of rubber absorption on the aging resistance of hot and warm asphalt rubber binders prepared with waste tire rubber

Danning Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that CRM absorption can hinder the attack of oxygen on bitumen, maintaining a softer environment around the swelling rubber and improving the aging resistance of AR. The incorporation of WMA additives affected the rheological properties of AR but did not compromise its aging resistance.

Surface activation of scrap tire crumb rubber to improve compatibility of rubberized asphalt

Jin Li et al.

Summary: Scrap tires management has become a major concern, with crumb rubber being used as a modifier for paving asphalt to create rubberized asphalt. Despite being considered a green paving material, rubberized asphalt faces limitations due to incompatibility with the asphalt matrix; surface activation of rubber can address this issue.
