Potentiality of the Use of Pyroclastic Volcanic Residues in the Production of Alkali Activated Material

Germana Barone et al.

Summary: The study investigated the potential use of volcanic residues for the production of alkali activated material, particularly for the restoration of Baroque Sicilian architecture. By activating volcanic pyroclastic deposits considered waste materials and adding different amounts of metakaolin in the formulations, small quantities of zeolites were formed as a result of the alkali activation process. The mechanical-physical results showed a strong dependence of mechanical strength on the metakaolin amount, indicating the potential of these pyroclastic wastes for valorization in the restoration field.

Dependence of the geopolymerization process and end-products to the nature of solid precursors: Challenge of the sustainability

Kamseu Elie et al.

Summary: The solid precursor plays a determinant role in the performance and potential applications of geopolymers, influencing the process, alkaline solution, curing conditions, and end-product orientations. The amorphous fraction and availability of Al and Si cations in the solid precursor governs the geopolymerization process, leading to the formation of either high strength concretes or mortars/precast depending on the precursor's characteristics. Temperature and relative humidity during curing are directly linked to the nature of the solid precursor.

Summary: The study prepared geopolymers based on two kinds of volcanic ash from Shanxi and Jilin Provinces in China, characterized their chemical composition and physical properties. Results showed that S2 has higher geopolymerization activity and mechanical strength due to higher content of amorphous phase and smaller particle size.

Synthesis of zeolite from volcanic ash: Characterization and application for cesium removal

Claudia Belviso et al.

Summary: The study found that hydrothermal treatment can change the mineralogical and magnetic properties of volcanic ashes, producing X-type zeolite and sodalite at aging temperatures of 45, 60, and 70°C. Magnetic characterization indicated a transformation of ferromagnetic materials to antiferromagnetic ones during zeolite formation. The obtained zeolite was evaluated as a novel adsorbent material in the field of water treatment.
