Quantitative evaluation of the characteristics of air voids and their relationship with the permeability and salt freeze-thaw resistance of hybrid steel-polypropylene fiber-reinforced concrete composites

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: Hybrid fiber affects the structure and performance of concrete by altering the characteristics of air voids. The relationship between air void structure and concrete permeability and salt freeze-thaw resistance is quantitatively analyzed. The hybrid ST-PP fiber can enhance the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of concrete after salt F-T cycles, but has a negative effect on concrete permeability. Total air-void content, number of air voids, and tortuosity are key factors influencing the permeability and F-T resistance of concrete.

Real-time strain monitoring of reinforced concrete under the attacks of sulphate and chloride ions based on XCT and DIC methods

Xiaoxian Wang et al.

Summary: The influences of different sulphate and chloride laden environment on the corrosion of reinforced concrete were examined in real time by digital image correlation (DIC) technology combined with traditional strain measurement. The results showed that sulphate ions inhibit the corrosion of steel bars and suppress the corrosion effect produced by chloride ions.

Relationship between fractal feature and compressive strength of concrete based on MIP

Xiao Han et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the pore structure characteristics of concrete with different strength grades using Mercury intrusion porosimetry and established a mathematical model between fractal dimension and compressive strength. The fractal dimension can accurately describe the pore characteristics and is correlated with pore diameter and specific surface area.

Dependence of chloride ion diffusivity on evolution of pore-structures in freeze-thawed shotcrete: Multiscale characterization and modeling

Mengxin Liu et al.

Summary: The freezing-thawing action-induced evolution of shotcrete pore-structure is a potential cause of resistance degradation of chloride ion diffusion in cold regions. Through a combined multiscale experimental characterization and numerical modeling study, essential parameters for quantifying pore structure evolution in microscale and the important role of porosity in interfacial transition zones in mesoscale have been identified. The study reveals that F-T induced microcracks greatly affect the chloride ion diffusivity of cement paste and ITZ in shotcrete, and provides an effective tool to better understand the degradation mechanisms of chloride ion resistance of cement-based materials under F-T action.

Performance of internal curing materials in high-performance concrete: A review

Fengming Xu et al.

Summary: One critical issue in the application of HPC is early cracking, which can be effectively addressed by internal curing methods that depend on the quantity, particle size, and absorbed water of the curing material. The study provides a comprehensive review of different internal curing materials for HPC and their effects on mechanical properties, autogenous shrinkage, and durability. Predicting equations for HPC with various internal curing materials are also proposed to aid further research and application.

Influence of curing temperature on belite cement hydration: A comparative study with Portland cement

Shiva Shirani et al.

Summary: The hydration characteristics of belite cements (BCs) at different curing temperatures were studied and compared with Portland cements (PCs). It was found that BCs exhibit improved mechanical performance at mild curing temperatures due to a higher degree of reaction and lower porosity coarsening. Various techniques were used to thoroughly understand the behavior of BCs in comparison to PCs.

Repair of ordinary Portland cement concrete using alkali activated slag/fly ash: Freeze-thaw resistance and pore size evolution of adhesive interface

Jingchong Fan et al.

Summary: The study repaired old concrete using a mixture of slag and fly ash as cementitious materials, and investigated the modification of new-to-old concrete adhesive interface by adjusting the mass ratio of slag to fly ash. The results showed that the addition of 50% slag reduced defects and harmful pores in the adhesive interface, significantly increased the content of amorphous gels, and improved the performance of the interface.

Effect of Silica Fume on Metakaolin Geopolymers' Sulfuric Acid Resistance

Oliver Vogt et al.

Summary: The importance of Si/Al ratio in geopolymer mix designs for acid resistance was demonstrated by modifying a metakaolin-based geopolymer with different percentages of silica fume. Testing showed that above a critical silica fume content, erosion of the sample surface by complete dissolution can be prevented, leading to densification of protective areas of the corroded layer and delaying corrosion progress.
