Toward the development of sustainable concrete with Crumb Rubber: Design-oriented Models, Life-Cycle-Assessment and a site application

Rebecca J. Gravina et al.

Summary: This study establishes design-oriented models for the compressive strength of crumb rubber aggregate concrete and undertakes a large scale life-cycle analysis to theoretically assess its mechanical properties and environmental performance. Through theoretical work and lab-based experiments, a green concrete mix containing crumb rubber aggregate and other waste-based materials is developed for practical field applications as pavement materials, showcasing the transition of lab technologies into real-world engineering applications.

Effect of different treatments of crumb rubber on the durability characteristics of rubberized concrete

Rida Alwi Assaggaf et al.

Summary: This study focused on improving the durability of concrete by treating crumb rubber particles. The treated CR showed reduced water absorption in concrete and improved acid resistance in certain cases. The best performance against acid attack was observed in cement-treated CRC, which also exhibited increased electrical resistivity and chloride permeability due to changes in pore structure.

Mechanical Properties and Durability Performance of Recycled Aggregate Concrete Containing Crumb Rubber

Robert B. Ataria et al.

Summary: Despite extensive research studies, recycled aggregates and worn-out tyres are still not fully reused. This study focuses on the workability, mechanical properties, and durability performance of concrete made with 100% recycled aggregates and crumb rubber. The results reveal that incorporating 5% crumb rubber improves the workability and mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete, but reduces its compressive strength. The durability performance suggests the use of rubber recycled aggregate concrete for applications where exposure conditions are not extreme.

Scope of reusing waste shredded tires in concrete and cementitious composite materials: A review

Amin Hamdi et al.

Summary: Over 1.5 billion waste tires are generated annually worldwide, with a predicted 4% increase in demand reaching 3 billion units by 2019. The black pollution caused by these non-biodegradable waste tires poses a potential threat to the environment. Incorporating discarded tires into concrete as aggregates can be an effective way to immobilize waste and reduce environmental impact.

Crumb Rubber in Concrete-The Barriers for Application in the Construction Industry

Patricia Kara De Maeijer et al.

Summary: This state-of-the-art review aims to summarize the experiences of crumb rubber application in concrete over the past 30 years, identifying barriers such as cost, mechanical properties reduction, lack of research, and recyclability. Despite these challenges, crumb rubber has advantages as an alternative material in concrete and can be diversified for more efficient applications through surface treatment and mix design optimization.
