Interlaboratory study on low temperature asphalt binder testing using Dynamic Shear Rheometer with 4 mm diameter parallel plate geometry

Johannes Buchner et al.

Summary: An interlaboratory study was conducted among 20 European road asphalt laboratories to screen current test protocols for testing low temperature properties of asphalt binders. The study found significant differences between the laboratories, indicating the need for standardization. A follow-up interlaboratory study has been initiated to revise the corresponding European Standard.

Using the Dynamic Shear Rheometer for Low-Temperature Grading of Asphalt Binders

Satyavati Komaragiri et al.

Summary: This article investigates the feasibility of using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) to replace the bending beam rheometer (BBR) for evaluating the low-temperature performance of asphalt binders. The study shows that the method of measuring complex shear moduli and phase angle using the DSR is a more practical alternative for routine use.

Asphalt Binder Testing at Low Temperature: Three-Point Bending Beam Test in Dynamic Shear Rheometer

Yun Su Kim et al.

Summary: A novel Three-Point Bending Beam Test (3-PBT) using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) is introduced for testing asphalt binder at low temperature conditions. Compared to the traditional Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) tests, the 3-PBT in DSR has several advantages, including the elimination of harmful cooling medium, lower amount of asphalt binder required, easier specimen preparation with silicone rubber mold, and a more practical loading protocol. The precision of the 3-PBT in DSR is found to be satisfying, and the results correlate well with the BBR tests.
