Genetic Structure of the Root Vole Microtus oeconomus: Resistance of the Habitat Specialist to the Natural Fragmentation of Preferred Moist Habitats

Rafal Lopucki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of long-term habitat changes on the genetic structure of the root vole population. Despite spatial fragmentation, the population did not show high genetic structure, and distance was the main differentiating factor. The migratory abilities of the root vole compensated for genetic effects of wetland fragmentation.

Lack of detectable genetic isolation in the cyclic rodent Microtus arvalis despite large landscape fragmentation owing to transportation infrastructures

Julio C. Dominguez et al.

Summary: The study found that cyclic voles may mitigate the genetic impacts of roads during population density peaks through massive dispersal. Therefore, when considering the genetic effects of roads on animals, the influence of population density fluctuations on genetic impact should be taken into account.
