Expression and function of circular RNAs in the mammalian brain

Kaiyu Xu et al.

Summary: The mammalian brain exhibits extraordinary complexity in structure, function, and diverse biological and physiological processes. CircRNAs, a novel class of transcripts with a covalently closed-loop structure, are highly enriched in the brain and are produced through alternative back-splicing of genes associated with synaptogenesis and neural activities. Despite the unclear biological functions of most circRNAs in the brain, emerging evidence suggests that dynamic changes in circRNA expression play a critical role in brain function and maintaining physiological homeostasis.
