Drivers and consequences of agricultural land abandonment and its reutilisation pathways: A systematic review

Yuba Raj Subedi et al.

Summary: Agricultural land abandonment is a complex global phenomenon driven by multiple factors and with contrasting impacts on agrobiodiversity, environment, and society. This study provides an overview of the drivers, consequences, and pathways for reutilization of abandoned agricultural lands, highlighting the negative impacts and research gaps in this field. It offers valuable insights for rural development stakeholders to identify future research needs and understand the trade-offs and opportunities associated with land abandonment.

Spatial dependence between training and test sets: another pitfall of classification accuracy assessment in remote sensing

N. Karasiak et al.

Summary: Spatial autocorrelation is inherent to remotely sensed data and can improve classification performance, but ignoring spatial dependence between training and test sets may lead to overestimation of generalisation capabilities. Spatial leave-one-out cross-validation is a better strategy for providing unbiased estimates of predictive error.

Spatiotemporal distribution of labeled data can bias the validation and selection of supervised learning algorithms: A marine remote sensing example

Andy Stock

Summary: Supervised learning can predict in-situ variables from satellite measurements. However, the non-random distribution of available data in space and time can bias estimates of prediction errors. This study demonstrates the importance of this problem in marine remote sensing and tests different statistical designs for validation.

Land Use Classification of VHR Images for Mapping Small-Sized Abandoned Citrus Plots by Using Spectral and Textural Information

Sergio Morell-Monzo et al.

Summary: This research proposes a methodology to map abandoned citrus plots using spectral and textural features derived from NDVI, with pixel-based classification using the Random Forest algorithm. The model showed high overall accuracy for both pixel-based classification (87%) and plot-based classification (95%), with key variables such as contrast, dissimilarity, NIR band, and blue band being statistically significant.

Determining the Intangible: Detecting Land Abandonment at Local Scale

Barbara Czesak et al.

Summary: This study utilized airborne laser scanning data to investigate agricultural land abandonment in Poland, showing that ALS data processing with kernel functions is a promising method for detecting ALA. Results compared to a visual interpretation control method demonstrated 82% concordance, with higher accuracy achieved using the triweight function.

Assessing the Sentinel-2 Capabilities to Identify Abandoned Crops Using Deep Learning

Enrique Portales-Julia et al.

Summary: The abandonment of agro-forestry practices leads to abandoned land parcels that do not meet the requirements for European agricultural policy subsidies. This study proposes a methodology using remote sensing data and deep learning classifiers to detect abandoned crops in the Valencian Community, achieving a high accuracy in distinguishing between abandoned and active parcels. The results indicate that Sentinel-2 features are suitable for land use identification, including abandoned lands, and suggest the potential for implementing this remote sensing-based methodology in monitoring agricultural subsidy payments under the CAP.

Crop type mapping using LiDAR, Sentinel-2 and aerial imagery with machine learning algorithms

Adriaan Jacobus Prins et al.

Summary: LiDAR data is increasingly available and plays a crucial role in precision agriculture. By combining LiDAR, Sentinel-2, and aerial imagery data with machine learning algorithms, different crop types can be effectively differentiated, providing a foundation for operational crop type mapping.
