Combining UAV multispectral imagery and ecological factors to estimate leaf nitrogen and grain protein content of wheat

Zhaopeng Fu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen is essential for wheat growth and grain quality, and leaf nitrogen content (LNC) serves as a critical indicator for crop nitrogen status, aiding in the estimation of grain protein content (GPC). The use of UAV-based multispectral imagery has shown promising results in monitoring LNC and estimating GPC, with the addition of texture information and ecological factors further enhancing accuracy. Development of vegetation indices using specific bands has contributed to effective LNC monitoring and GPC estimation in wheat, demonstrating the potential of remote sensing technology in precision agriculture.

Rice nitrogen nutrition estimation with RGB images and machine learning methods

Peihua Shi et al.

Summary: The random forest regression models showed the highest accuracy for estimating DM, LAI, and NA in the validation dataset, followed by BPNN and SNR models. The BPNN models were found to be most susceptible to dataset splitting, with the highest standard deviation and interval range of ATPA among the three regression methods, while RF and SNR models were less affected by dataset splitting, producing consistently robust regression models. The ensemble algorithm of the RF model effectively prevented overfitting and demonstrated strong generalization performance, highlighting the potential of combining digital imagery with machine learning methods for crop N nutrition estimation.

Remote estimation of leaf area index (LAI) with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imaging for different rice cultivars throughout the entire growing season

Yan Gong et al.

Summary: This study explores a simple method to remotely estimate Leaf Area Index (LAI) of different rice cultivars using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imaging. Results show a significant hysteresis in the relationship between Vegetation Indices (VI) and LAI in rice, which can be reduced by using the product of VI and canopy height to estimate LAI with errors under 24% throughout the entire growing season. The model developed in this study combines remotely sensed canopy height and VI information, improving rice LAI estimation at both pre- and post-heading stages without requiring re-parameterization.
