Effect of temperature variation on the plate-end debonding of FRP-strengthened beams: A theoretical study

Dong Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the plate-end debonding failure in FRP-strengthened beams subjected to thermal and mechanical loading, using a bilinear bond-slip model to describe the bond behavior at the FRP-to-substrate interface. The results show that an increase in service temperature leads to increased interfacial slip at the plate end, resulting in a reduced plate-end debonding load.

Effects of temperature variation on intermediate crack-induced debonding and stress intensity factor in FRP-retrofitted cracked steel beams: An analytical study

Dong Guo et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analytical solution for the full-range debonding process of an FRP-retrofitted steel beam under combined thermal and mechanical loading. The effect of thermal stress on the IC debonding load and SIF at the notch is examined, showing that a temperature decrease may lead to a reduced IC debonding load and increased SIF. Results indicate that the effect is more significant with a thicker and stiffer FRP plate applied for retrofitting the steel beam.

Fatigue behavior of notched steel beams strengthened by a prestressed CFRP plate subjected to wetting/drying cycles

Jun Deng et al.

Summary: The study derived the interfacial energy release rate at the notch location for strengthened steel beams and found that prestressed CFRP strengthening significantly reduces interfacial crack propagation, thereby improving fatigue performance. Experimental results showed that prestressed CFRP strengthening increases fatigue resistance, while wetting/drying cycle exposure decreases fatigue life.

Debonding analysis of FRP-to-concrete interfaces between two adjacent cracks in plated beams under temperature variations

Summary: This paper presents an analytical study on the full-range deformation behavior of the FRP-to-concrete interface between two adjacent cracks under combined mechanical and thermal loadings. The results indicate that the thermal loadings significantly influence the behavior of the bond interface and the ultimate load.

Effect of temperature variation on the plate-end debonding of FRP-strengthened steel beams: Coupled mixed-mode cohesive zone modeling

Dong Guo et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a closed-form analytical solution based on a coupled mixed-mode cohesive zone model to analyze the effect of thermal stress on the debonding failure of FRP-strengthened steel beams. The analytical solution achieves excellent agreement with finite element modeling and further parametric studies indicate that thermal stresses tend to reduce the plate-end debonding load, especially when a thicker FRP plate is used.

Effects of adhesive property and thickness on the bond performance between carbon fiber reinforced polymer laminate and steel

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the bond performance of CFRP-steel using a single lap shear test, focusing on the impact of adhesive toughness and bonding thickness. The study finds that for tough adhesives, increasing bonding thickness improves fracture energy but reduces interface stiffness, while the effects of bonding thickness on brittle adhesives are negligible. Key parameters for bond-slip models of tough and brittle adhesives in delamination of CFRP laminate are determined based on experimental and literature results.

Mechanical behavior of large-rupture-strain (LRS) polyethylene naphthalene fiber bundles at different strain rates and temperatures

Yu-Lei Bai et al.

Summary: This experimental study investigated the impact of strain rate and temperature on the tensile mechanical properties of PEN fiber bundles. Results showed that tensile strength and elastic modulus increased with strain rate, while failure strain decreased. Additionally, the effects of temperature on tensile strength, toughness, and failure strain were not consistent from -50°C to 50°C.

Full-range behavior of FRP-to-concrete bonded joints subjected to combined effects of loading and temperature variation

Dong-Ge Jia et al.

Summary: Concrete structures strengthened with externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are likely to experience significant temperature variations due to daily and seasonal temperature changes or possible fire exposure during service life. This paper presents an analytical study for the first time to predict the full-range deformation behavior of a mechanically loaded FRP-to-concrete bonded joint with a limited bond length under temperature variations. The closed-form analytical solution has enabled isolation of the interfacial thermal stress effect from the temperature-induced changes of material properties, thereby leading to an accurate calibration of the bond-slip characteristics and the interfacial fracture energy.

Systematic literature review of the application of extended finite element method in failure prediction of pipelines

M. M. Shahzamanian et al.

Summary: Ground movements in arctic regions from freezing and thawing can cause pipeline failures with factors like internal pressure, geometry, corrosion, and pre-existing dents speeding up the process. Various methods, including XFEM, are used to predict and study these failure processes, with XFEM being considered the most efficient for crack propagation. Research has shown that XFEM simulations align well with experiments, accurately predict crack propagation, and efficiently study the effects of parameters on pipeline crack propagation.
