Flexural property evaluation of web reinforced GFRP-PET foam sandwich panel: Experimental study and numerical simulation

Honglei Xie et al.

Summary: This study focused on the flexural property of PET foam-filled lattice composite sandwich panels under four-point bending. Increasing the thickness of face sheet and PET foam can effectively improve the ultimate load of the panels. Experimental results and theoretical predictions showed errors within 10% for bending stiffness and ultimate load.

Fracture toughness and crack growth resistance of sandwich panels with grooved cores

Vahid Gholami et al.

Summary: This study investigated the debonding toughness of facesheet to the core in a sandwich beam with grooved core using numerical and experimental methods. The results showed that increasing the number and width of the grooves enhanced the resistance of the sandwich beams against the growth of interfacial cracks.

Study on the low-velocity impact response of foam-filled multi-cavity composite panels

Jiye Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of lattice-web layout on the low-velocity impact performance of foam filled multi-cavity composite panels (FMCPs) and develops an energy balance model to predict the peak loads of the FMCPs. The study demonstrates that FMCP with double-layer dislocation webs can be used as an effective energy buffer due to its light weight and great energy absorption capacity. Numerical models and parametric analysis on GFRP thickness and foam density were also conducted in the study.

Uncover the underlying mechanisms of topology and structural hierarchy in energy absorption performances of bamboo-inspired tubular honeycomb

Wen Zhang et al.

Summary: Inspired by the microstructures of bamboo culm wall, this study proposes a topological tubular honeycomb with structural hierarchy and demonstrates its outstanding energy absorption capabilities through experiments and numerical modeling. A theoretical model is developed to capture the structure-performance characteristics of bamboo-inspired tubular honeycombs, and accurately predicts their energy absorption capacities with different topological parameters and hierarchical orders. The results reveal the governing laws of structural hierarchy, topological parameters, and their coupling effects on the energy performance of tubular honeycombs.
