Chiral and non-centrosymmetric effects on the nonlinear wave propagation characteristics of architectured cellular materials

N. Karathanasopoulos et al.

Summary: This work investigates the impact of chirality and non-centrosymmetry on the nonlinear wave propagation characteristics of periodic architectured media. The results show that chiral architectures are more affected by inner kinematic nonlinearities compared to achiral lattice designs. Non-centrosymmetric inner designs also modify the wave propagation attributes of both chiral and achiral lattice patterns, with different frequency ranges affected depending on the lattice type.

Metamaterial design strategy for mechanical energy absorption under general loading

Jack E. Pechac et al.

Summary: This article presents a design strategy for two-dimensional, multi-stable cellular materials that utilizes local rotational degrees of freedom to support mechanical energy absorption under general loading. The cellular materials constructed following this strategy possess an absorption capability for all loading modes - tension, compression, and shear, filling the need for omni-directional, multi-modal energy absorption in a low-density, tunable, and re-usable platform.

SMP-based multi-stable mechanical metamaterials: From bandgap tuning to wave logic gates

Zhiwen Ren et al.

Summary: This work proposes a method of creating geometrically reconfigurable and mechanically tunable multi-stable metamaterials to realize a kind of tunable elastic metamaterial with a stable state during the active regulation without continuous-consuming energy based on 4D printing technology. The tunable elastic metamaterial can adjust the starting/ending frequencies, broaden the frequency ranges of bandgaps and control the elastic wave propagation. The method can be used in vibration-isolated steady-state adjustable equipment and smart wave device, and a bi-stable logic-gate elastic metamaterial is implemented to correctly execute simple wave logic operations.

Seismic metamaterials with cross-like and square steel sections for low-frequency wide band gaps

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the propagation of Lamb waves in seismic metamaterials assembled using periodically arranged cross-like and square steel sections in a soil medium to assess the feasibility of their use for seismic wave attenuation. The results show that seismic metamaterials with three complete band gaps below 20 Hz are of particular interest for low-frequency vibration control, with those composed of square steel sections exhibiting a more favorable performance in terms of wider band gaps. The study provides a new way to build seismic metamaterials by designing the volume fraction and steel section shapes to provide ultra-low and broad-band frequency vibration isolation capabilities that will allow the shielding of seismic waves in specific frequency ranges.
