The effects of metallothionein in paraquat-induced Parkinson disease model of zebrafish

Nor Haliza Mohamad Najib et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of full-length human metallothionein 2 peptide (hMT2) on paraquat-induced brain injury in zebrafish. The results showed that hMT2 was able to reverse the effects of paraquat, reduce lipid peroxidation, and increase the number of dopaminergic neurons.

Emodin alleviates acute hypoxia-induced apoptosis in gibel carp (Carassius gibelio) by upregulating autophagy through modulation of the AMPK/mTOR pathway

Liyun Wu et al.

Summary: Emodin can alleviate impairment induced by acute hypoxia in gibel carp by inhibiting hypoxia signaling and reducing oxidative damage. It also inhibits endoplasmic reticulum stress, enhances autophagy, inhibits apoptosis, and functions through the AMPK/mTOR pathway.

Lycopene attenuates oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis by modulating Nrf2/NF-κB balance in sulfamethoxazole-induced neurotoxicity in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella)

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study suggests that lycopene (LYC) can ameliorate brain injury induced by sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. LYC also restores the defense mechanisms of the brain. Therefore, LYC could be a potential candidate for alleviating environmental SMZ stress.

Histopathology and transcriptome analysis reveals the gills injury and immunotoxicity in gibel carp following acute deltamethrin exposure

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: Increasing evidence shows that the exposure to deltamethrin has negative effects on immune function and mucosal immunity in aquatic animals. This study found that deltamethrin exposure resulted in tissue injury and immunotoxicity in the gills of gibel carp, leading to decreased mucous cells and downregulated immune system process and tumor necrosis factor receptor binding pathways. These findings help explain why deltamethrin-exposed fish are more susceptible to viral or bacterial infections.

Vitamin C Attenuates Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Apoptosis Induced by Acute Hypoxia through the Nrf2/Keap1 Signaling Pathway in Gibel Carp (Carassius gibelio)

Liyun Wu et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that vitamin C has a protective effect in fish. In this study, it was found that vitamin C can attenuate oxidative damage, inflammation, and acute hypoxia-induced apoptosis in gibel carp. This protective mechanism is mediated through the activation of the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway. These findings provide new insights into the defense strategies of fish under hypoxic conditions.

The heart as a target for deltamethrin toxicity: Inhibition of Nrf2/HO-1 pathway induces oxidative stress and results in inflammation and apoptosis

Xue Yang et al.

Summary: As a synthetic pyrethroid pesticide, deltamethrin (DLM) is widely used in veterinary medicine and farming. DLM-induced oxidative stress causes harm to organisms. The purpose of this research was to study the impact and molecular mechanism of DLM on inflammation and apoptosis in quail cardiomyocytes through the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. The results showed that DLM induced dose-dependent cardiomyocyte injury by weakening antioxidant defense through down-regulating Nrf2 and HO-1. Furthermore, DLM stimulation induced apoptosis in quail heart and increased inflammation markers.

Summary: The F strain of gibel carp exhibited superior stress response and antioxidant defense compared to the A strain when exposed to cadmium. While the F strain showed higher antioxidant response and endoplasmic reticulum stress, the A strain displayed higher autophagy and apoptosis response under cadmium exposure. This study revealed genotype-specific differences in defense strategies against metal exposure in gibel carp strains.
