Impact of multi-injection strategies on morphology, nanostructure and oxidation reactivity of diesel soot particles

Xingyu Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that pilot injection resulted in formation of soot particles with smaller size, more ordered nanostructure, and higher graphitization degree, while post injection led to particles with larger size, more OC content, and more ambiguous boundary. Generally, soot particles with disordered nanostructure and higher OC content exhibited better oxidation reactivity.

Investigation of the ignition processes of a multi-injection flame in a Diesel engine environment using the flamelet model

Xu Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, a flamelet analysis is conducted using DNS of a multi-injection flame, focusing on auto-ignition and interaction-ignition processes. The influences of mixture field interactions and the scalar dissipation rate on ignition process are investigated by varying species composition boundary conditions of transient flamelet equations. Budget analyses of the generalized flamelet equations show the transport along the mixture fraction iso-surface is insignificant during auto-ignition, but becomes important during interaction-ignition.

LES study on the interaction between the local flow and flame structure in multi-injection of n-dodecane

Wanhui Zhao et al.

Summary: Large-eddy simulation is used to simulate n-dodecane split injections with a dwell time of 0.5 ms, studying the interactions between the flame induced by the first injection and the secondly injected spray. Results show an increase in axial velocity for the second injection, combustion preventing air entrainment, and high-temperature reaction regions moving to fuel-richer regions. The effects of initial temperature and first injection duration on the combustion process are further discussed, with higher initial temperatures delaying the increase in species mass fraction and reduced fuel in the first injection leading to quicker consumption of hydrogen peroxide and formaldehyde. Additionally, chemical explosive mode analysis indicates that combustion of the second spray is controlled by mixing.

A two-equation soot-in-flamelet modeling approach applied under Spray A conditions

Leonardo Pachano et al.

Summary: This study investigates soot production in transient, high-pressure, turbulent n-dodecane Spray A flames from the Engine Combustion Network using computational fluid dynamics simulations. A two-equation soot-in-flamelet modeling approach is applied and validated against experimental data. The modeling approach is able to capture the effects of ambient conditions on soot production and shows good quantitative agreement with experimental trends.
